AMC Acquires French Pandemic Drama ‘The Plague’ for Portugal, Spain (EXCLUSIVE)

As a lifelong admirer and student of literature, I am overjoyed to see the adaptation of Albert Camus’ masterpiece “La Peste,” or “The Plague,” making its way across Europe. Having read and re-read this novel countless times, I can attest that the themes of resilience, sacrifice, and humanity it portrays have never felt more relevant than they do today.

The French pandemic drama “The Plague,” adapted from Albert Camus’ novel “La Peste,” has been acquired by several European regions, according to recent reports from EbMaster.

The television program has been purchased by AMC Networks International Southern Europe, and it is set to debut on SundanceTV in Spain and AMC in Portugal. Additionally, Proximus secured the rights for broadcasting in Belgium. The series made its initial appearance on France 2 in March, promptly dominating the ratings. Moreover, it has been chosen to be featured at the French Drama Festival in Korea, with its Korean premiere scheduled for September 9th.

The four-part series, directed by Antoine Garceau from “Call My Agent,” features actors including Frédéric Pierrot (“In Treatment”), Hugo Becker (“Gossip Girl”), Sofia Essaïdi (“Women at War”), Judith Chemla (“Of Money and Blood”) and Johan Heldenbergh (“Alabama Monroe”).

I, as a passionate movie-goer, would describe it like this: I’m drawn into the story of an eclectic band of individuals who are all dealing with a mysterious virus that’s jeopardizing our world. Among them is Dr. Rieux, a defiant figure willing to sacrifice everything to combat the disease; Sylvain Rambert, a journalist struggling between love and responsibility; the brave whistleblower, Laurence Molinier; Lucie Ferrieres, a pianist with a fighting spirit; and Jean Tarrou, an enigmatic partner to Dr. Rieux in this battle against the unknown.

In a modern twist, renowned showrunner Georges-Marc Benamou and talented screenwriter Gilles Taurand have skillfully reimagined Albert Camus’ iconic 1947 novel, making it resonate in today’s world.

The series was produced by Siècle Productions (“Voltaire in Love”).

Katia Sol, co-founder of Oble, expressed joy about ‘The Plague’ gaining popularity throughout Europe. She believes that the enduring wisdom found in Albert Camus’ classic work, with its themes of resilience, sacrifice, and humanity, is more relevant than ever today. Expanding this adaptation to additional regions feels particularly significant given our current global situation. Katia is thrilled that audiences will have the opportunity to watch this contemporary interpretation of a timeless masterpiece by Albert Camus.
