Amber Ruffin Says It Would Have Been ‘Impossible’ to Make Jokes About ‘Both’ Democrats and Republicans at White House Correspondents’ Dinner: ‘They Would Not Have Liked It’

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” comedy enthusiast here, Amber Ruffin, shared her thoughts on why she was not able to perform at the White House Correspondents‘ Dinner last Saturday.

Originally, Ruffin was planned to be the main act at the WHC Dinner, following a series of comedians who typically lighten up a formal gathering. However, when a White House deputy chief of staff voiced worries over Ruffin’s past criticisms of Donald Trump, the White House Correspondents’ Association decided to replace her from the event. The association explained that their aim was to “avoid focusing on political divisions,” as stated by them.

When inquired about her removal from the event, Ruffin expressed that finding humor in both Democratic and Republican parties under the present presidential administration seemed “unfeasible” due to their recent actions.

Ruffin stated, ‘It seems challenging to create humor that applies to all parties involved,’ he explained. ‘Currently, one group is apprehending individuals off the street and transporting them elsewhere, while the other isn’t engaging in such actions. I found it hard to find a common ground for joking about both sides.’

Ruffin expressed deep sorrow for approximately two hours upon learning about the cancellation of her appearance, but later on, she enjoyed a leisurely brunch and felt fantastic.

Ruffin expressed that if they weren’t keen on him performing in the show before he even spoke a word, then they would have been extremely disappointed with the outcome. Moreover, after being dismissed, he revisited his Google Doc and realized it wouldn’t have been favorable – they certainly wouldn’t have enjoyed it.

Initially, Ruffin’s depiction of her WHC Dinner artwork sparked controversy. However, she mentioned that she intended to end her performance on a positive and inspiring note instead.

She clarified, ‘The intention of this administration is to make you feel hostile towards others, but that’s not your inherent nature.’ Humans are designed to show affection towards each other…They managed to deceive you into believing that you are full of hatred, which is untrue. It goes against your very purpose, and admitting it now brings me joy because I was canceled for saying so.
