Amazon’s New Fantasy Series Powerless Could Replace Wheel of Time

A fresh fantasy series is being created at Amazon, potentially becoming a favorite among fans who missed the cancelled show “…“. According to reports, the series known as “Powerless” is under development for Prime Video. This series is adapted from Lauren Roberts’ young adult book trilogy, with planned releases in 2023, 2024, and 2025: “Powerless, “, “Reckless, “, and “Fearless“.

As a “romantasy” series, the TV show adaptation of “Powerless” is being developed by Daphne Ferraro, who was previously the lead writer for the first season of the German series “Maxton Hall.” This series can be found on Prime Video as well. The upcoming first season will reportedly stick to the original novel and is being produced by Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge and Lyrical Media, which holds the rights to all three books in the series.

The Show Will Focus on the “Elites” and the “Ordinaries”

The series, much like the novels, will unfold within the realm of Illya. In this kingdom, a faction known as “The Elites” wield power and hunt down those who lack such abilities. However, an ordinary woman named Paedyn Grey, through chance, rescues Prince Kai, the king’s second son and a fellow ordinary hunter.

In the heart of the city’s slums, Pedyn, a woman with a past as a thief, finds herself unwillingly embroiled in the “Purging Contests” orchestrated by the king, following her father’s execution. These contests offer fame, wealth, and the limelight – things she’s long tried to evade. A romantic twist emerges as the Prince and Pedyn engage in these trials.

Powerless Creator was Behind one of the Most Successful International Shows on Prime

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I, Ferraro, am the mastermind behind the creation of “Powerless.” I will be donning the hats of both showrunner and executive producer, working side by side with Gluck, Madison Jones, and Jacqueline Monetta under Olive Bridge. Additionally, we have Lyrical Media’s dynamic duo, Alex Black and Jon Rosenberg, as well as Natalie Sellers, all contributing their expertise. Lastly, we have the esteemed Roberts joining our team. Ferraro’s Maxton Hall production was Amazon MGM Studio’s most triumphant international series debut so far. Moreover, the writer has contributed as a scriptwriter for Season 2 of Netflix’s “Dark” and penned the screenplay for the 2021 movie titled “Fly.

Could this Replace The Wheel of Time?

As a dedicated fantasy fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the debut of “Powerless,” given that no release date has been set yet. With “The Wheel of Time” taking a hiatus after its third season finale in April, there’s a noticeable gap in my viewing schedule that I hope this new show, created by Rafe Judkins and based on the Robert Jordan fantasy book series, will fill. Interestingly, “The Wheel of Time” has garnered over 143,000 signatures in a petition to revive the series, which is certainly a testament to its popularity among fans like myself.

Amazon made the final decision to terminate the series, featuring Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Madeline Madden, Zoë Robins, Joshua Stradowski, and Marcus Rutherford, following extensive discussions. The primary cause for its cancellation was the expensive production costs.

In 2021, I found myself being part of the audience witnessing the debut of The Wheel of Time on Amazon’s Prime Video, and it left a remarkable impression. Not only did it break records for the most-watched series premiere on that platform that year, but it also secured a place among the Top 5 series launches ever on Prime Video.
