Amazon’s God Of War Casts Key Ragnarok Character After Finding Kratos Star

The upcoming live-action series based on the video game God of War, coming to Prime Video, has added another important character from God of War Ragnarök to its cast. The series is a production of Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM. Ryan Hurst, known for his role in Sons of Anarchy, will play the character Kratos.

The God of War franchise began in 2005 as an action series based on Greek mythology. It was reimagined in 2018, moving the story to Norse mythology. A TV adaptation of the game was announced by Prime Video in 2022. The series has been ordered for two seasons, and filming preparations are happening now in Vancouver, with actors currently being cast.

Teresa Palmer will play the character Phoebe/Sif in the upcoming television series based on the video game God of War. Sif is a key character in Ragnarök, known as Thor’s wife and an important figure among the Aesir gods. Ronald D. Moore is writing and overseeing the show as showrunner and executive producer. Palmer has previously appeared in films such as Warm Bodies, Eliza Graves, and Lights Out.

The upcoming Prime Video series, God of War, will retell the story of Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they travel to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Throughout their journey, Kratos tries to guide Atreus in becoming a responsible god, and Atreus, in turn, encourages Kratos to be a better person.

Kratos, originally a Spartan warrior and later a god, is the main character in the God of War series. Growing up in a society focused on combat, he became a powerful military leader, but a terrible deal with the Greek god Ares cost him his soul. Over the course of more than 10 games, Kratos has defeated countless enemies – humans, creatures, and even gods – making him a legendary figure in gaming.

This role brings Hurst back to the world of God of War. He previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök and even received a BAFTA nomination for that performance.

The character of Sif in Palmer’s work is a notable departure from typical portrayals of Norse gods. She’s depicted as intelligent, politically savvy, and emotionally nuanced. This suggests the series is closely based on the Ragnarök mythology, rather than simply inspired by it.

Sif, along with characters like Thor and Odin, represents a more complex take on the Asgardian gods. Instead of being perfect figures from legend, they’re shown as people with real flaws, driven by things like fear, pride, and past losses. This hints that the show will focus on what’s happening within Asgard, not just Kratos’ battles.

As filming preparations progress and the cast is finalized, the God of War series promises to capture the powerful story and epic mythology that made the games so popular. The upcoming show is highly anticipated on Prime Video, with both dedicated fans and new viewers eager to see how Kratos and Atreus’ journey translates to the screen.
