Amazon TV Bosses Tease ‘Fallout’ Season 2 and ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Sequel Post-Emmy Noms, Say Donald Glover Has ‘Unpredictable’ Vision for New ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’

I’ve had the privilege of listening to Jennifer Salke and Eric Sanders discuss their exciting plans for Amazon Studios during a recent interview. With their infectious enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the industry, it’s clear they’re passionate about bringing high-quality content to audiences around the world.

Amazon’s “Fallout” TV adaptation and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine received Emmy nominations in the drama category on Wednesday. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, and Vernon Sanders, Amazon’s chief of TV, are thrilled that their platform has two shows contending for this year’s top award.

After the commotion had subsided, Salke and Sanders held a conversation with EbMaster to analyze the 62 total nominations obtained by Amazon and MGM Studios. Among these recognitions were 17 for “Fallout,” 16 for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and a nomination for the LGBTQ romantic comedy “Red, White & Royal Blue” in the TV movie category.

After HBO’s “The Last of Us” received much praise and recognition at the Emmys, did you think that “Fallout” had a good chance of earning similar accolades, or were you still hesitant due to past skepticism towards the awards response to video game adaptations and genre television?

Vernon Sanders: The producers, Jonah Nolan and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Graham Wagner, and Todd Howard, deserve all the praise for creating something truly exceptional and unconventional with “HBO’s Fallout.” When we first saw the material, we were captivated by its irreverent and unique tone. Although it varies greatly from “The Last of Us,” we knew it was a gem. The show’s success among fans of the “Fallout” video games is testament to Bethesda’s and our producers’ ability to create an original tribute. It’s no easy feat, so the critical acclaim and industry recognition are just added bonuses.

Jennifer Salke finds it exhilarating to witness the recognition of genre TV and the commitment to producing innovative, high-quality shows based on popular IP from gaming and literature. It’s inspiring to know that these productions can captivate audiences around the world. Our greatest joy comes from connecting with a global audience and seeing their appreciation for these shows and films.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m really looking forward to the next chapter of “Fallout” on TV. But I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see the same cast returning for Season 2 or if the creators plan to mix things up and adopt an anthology format instead. With so many intriguing stories waiting to be told in Bethesda/Microsoft’s “Fallout” video game universe, this could be a fascinating way to keep each season fresh and exciting.

Salke: We are committed to our journey with our beloved characters. Such a great Season 2 coming.

Sanders: We’ve been lucky as we’ve stuck to our initial plan. I believe we’re progressing faster than expected when it comes to producing Season 2. Although we don’t have a definitive release date at the moment, we’ve already received scripts for it and I’m confident that fans of Season 1 will be thrilled with the direction we’re taking in Season 2.

Salke expressed curiosity about whether this was an anthology series. He appreciated the numerous possibilities it presented. Regarding commitment, he confirmed that they were all invested in the characters introduced in Season 1 and were joining them on their journey.

As a movie buff, I’d say: “Having ‘Fallout’ receive Emmy nominations definitely sparks my interest in producing more video game adaptations. But it isn’t just about the hype or recognition. It requires a compelling story that stands out from the crowd, a fruitful collaboration with the creators of the IP, and a visionary team to bring it to life on the big screen. Luckily, we have a few projects in the pipeline that fit this description. One of them is ‘Tomb Raider,’ which I’m really looking forward to. And there might be some other exciting announcements coming up soon, but we’ll only move forward carefully and thoughtfully. Each project needs its own merit to make it worthwhile.”

Any update on the “God of War” TV series from PlayStation?

Salke: Stay tuned! We love “God of War.”

What was your reaction to the multiple nominations for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”?

Salke: That’s another example of a very creator-driven project for us.

Donald arrived with Francesca [Sloane], his accomplice from “Atlantic,” sharing a distinct goal to explore the dynamics of a relationship through their brand “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

In his discussions about marriage, Donald brought a sense of authenticity that went beyond typical spy or assassin couples. Instead, it focused on deeply developed characters and their relationships. The exceptional tone and Hiro Murai’s superb direction added to the overall brilliance of the piece, making it a standout character study. The outstanding guest cast also deserves recognition for their contributions.

Have there been whispers about Donald and Maya potentially returning for Season 2 of the show? Is it true?

Sanders: It’s so funny that you asked that!

Salke: It seems to be top of mind for everyone!

Sanders: Both Donald and Maya have presented their plans for Season 2, and we’re thoroughly looking forward to it. Their ideas are quite inventive. The direction they’re taking is truly unexpected.

Salke: I think it’ll bring audiences everything they want.

Following “Red, White & Royal Blue” being nominated, what’s the status on preparations for the next film installment? Have you had a chance to review the script yet?

Salke: We’re thrilled and deeply engaged as we move on to the second film. The creativity is exceptional, and we’re elated about the recognition our first film received with a nomination. This morning, I exchanged texts with producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Matt López, who are all equally proud. Naturally, we adore the movie, so we’re eager to produce the sequel and share it with audiences worldwide.

What does that nom mean for the future of rom-coms at Amazon?

As a cinephile, I can’t help but feel elated when I observe the impressive viewership numbers of “The Idea of You” featuring Anne Hathaway and our production, along with other well-crafted romantic comedies. The audience is yearning for something more than mindless entertainment, they crave depth and genuine connection in their romantic comedy experiences. And let me tell you, we’ve got it! We’re incredibly proud of these films, and the quality speaks for itself. The word of mouth and cultural buzz around them are a testament to our success. So, buckle up, because there’s definitely more where that came from!

As a dedicated fan of “The Boys” who has followed the series from its inception, I’m always eager to learn more about what’s next in store for this unique and captivating franchise. With Season 4 on the horizon and Season 5 just around the corner, my mind can’t help but wander to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.

Sanders: Eric Kripke and his producing partners have a clear vision for the shows, and we’ve fully supported them. Their dedication has paid off, leaving fans excited for “Gen V” Season 2. Despite the unfortunate loss of Chance Perdomo during production, the upcoming season promises to exceed expectations. As for future projects, we’ll proceed cautiously. We have numerous ideas, as does Eric, but we won’t move forward until we’re confident that our audience is eager for the story. So stay tuned for any potential announcements – they’ll be based on genuine fan interest.

Eric’s creativity has flowed abundantly since the beginning, and we’re thrilled about how it has shaped the franchise for our upcoming show.

Regarding the upcoming season of “Citadel,” could you please share any updates on the plans you have in store? And with the recent news that the Russo Brothers are reportedly set to helm two additional “Avengers” films, will they still be part of the project for “Citadel” Season 2?

As a cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting updates with you all! Firstly, I can confirm that the talented team behind “Citadel: Diana” is not only involved in the production but also directing the second season. We’re moving forward and can hardly contain our excitement about it!

Sanders: Each part of “Citadel,” such as “Diana” from Italy and “Honey Bunny” from India, carries unique regional tastes. Yet, they all contribute to a larger, global narrative. In the near future, we’ll announce the commencement of production for Season 2 of “Citadel” – the main series – and share details about the talented cast joining this franchise, which we’re thrilled about.
