Amazon "Still Trying To Find The Hook" For LOTR MMO

As a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I can only hope that Amazon‘s new MMO will be a masterpiece worthy of Middle-earth’s grandeur. The team’s quest for the “hook” to make their version stand out is understandable, given the rich tapestry of stories and lore Tolkien wove. Yet, as we all know, even the smallest of hobbits can leave a lasting impact.

The team behind Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO is currently searching for that compelling element or unique selling point to define the game’s essence, as mentioned by Amazon Games CEO Christoph Hartmann during his latest interview.

Last year, Amazon Games unveiled plans to develop a new MMO based on J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series, following an agreement with the Embracer Group. This announcement came after a prior deal between Amazon and Chinese company Leyou for an MMO adaptation of Tolkien’s seminal work. However, that project was canceled when Leyou was acquired by Tencent. Later on, the rights returned to Middle-Earth Enterprises and eventually landed with the Embracer Group.

In a recent interview with IGN, Hartmann revealed that although the game was announced last year, it remains in its initial stages of development. Consequently, the development team is actively seeking a unique approach to distinguish this project from previous ones.

Hartmann expressed that they are yet to discover the key element or unique concept for their next project, as they aim to avoid repeating the same things they’ve done before. Even though it can be appealing to work with established intellectual property, it’s not the primary reason for their creation process.

Hartmann went on to express that the team should aim to add an innovative element, making it distinct from the multitude of games currently available.

It’s understandable that his remarks about striving to be unique and avoiding repetition are logical given the ongoing Lord of the Rings MMORPG, “The Lord of the Rings Online” (launched in 2007), which remains popular with new content and updates.

In recent years, Amazon Games has established a strong reputation in the massive multiplayer online (MMO) gaming sector. They launched New World in 2021, which will soon be available on consoles and PC as New World: Aeternum. Additionally, they have published and localized popular Korean MMOs such as Lost Ark, as well as Throne and Liberty, for Western players to enjoy.

During the same interview, Hartmann described creating Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMOs) as challenging due to their high costs, both in terms of maintenance and regularly producing fresh content that appeals to players. He also noted that MMO players are an intensely dedicated group who tend to spend a significant amount of time playing these games.

Amazon is transitioning away from being exclusively a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game publisher, according to Hartmann. He referenced the newly unveiled King of Meat, which belongs to the action-RPG genre, as an illustration. Additionally, Hartmann stated that while artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially speed up and enhance game development, it won’t provide a complete solution. Despite its potential for reducing development times and costs, AI is not expected to solve all problems in the field of game development.

This isn’t the first time Hartmann has talked about the Lord of the Rings MMO. He previously said the difference between Amazon’s new MMO and the currently existing LOTRO will be like going from “black and white movies to color,” and that while LOTRO “isn’t a bad game,” players will eventually move on.

In a short while, the second season of Amazon’s show “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will premiere, delving into the backstory of Sauron. It’s important to note that this series is not related to Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO, as stated by the company.
