As a long-time cinema enthusiast who has weathered numerous changes in the streaming landscape, I must admit that I was initially taken aback by Amazon’s decision to phase out FreeVee. However, upon further reflection, I find myself feeling rather relieved. The thought of managing yet another streaming app was starting to become a daunting prospect, especially considering my ever-growing collection of chair pants (you know, those comfy trousers that double as a couch).
The court has made a decision: Amazon’s FreeVee service is being discontinued, not that you should expect cameras or James Marsden popping up unexpectedly! In a statement on Tuesday, Prime Video announced they will end their ad-supported streaming service. Don’t worry! You can still enjoy shows like Jury Duty and Primo— even without a Prime subscription. An Amazon spokesperson clarified that they are phasing out the Freevee brand to offer a more streamlined viewing experience for customers. The content available for Prime members will remain unchanged, and a wide selection of free streaming content will continue to be accessible for non-Prime members, including Originals from Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, and a vast library of FAST Channels – all available on Prime Video. The FreeVee app will still function, but users will eventually be directed to the Prime Video app. Previously FreeVee shows will be labeled as “Free to Watch” to prevent confusion with paid content. Thankfully, the chair pants have been spared from becoming lost media.
