As a movie enthusiast with a deep appreciation for Indian cinema and a soft spot for gripping crime thrillers, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming theater release of “Mirzapur”. Having binge-watched the series multiple times and fallen in love with the intricate characters and the raw energy that it exudes, I can’t wait to witness this captivating tale unfold on the silver screen.

Amazon Studios, along with MGM and Excel Entertainment, are bringing their successful Indian streaming series “Mirzapur” to cinemas, marking a notable shift in India’s entertainment industry.

2026 will see the big-screen debut of the film adaption of the popular Prime Video crime thriller series, originally produced in northern India, delving into power struggles and the criminal underworld. The series creator, Puneet Krishna, is set to oversee production, while Gurmmeet Singh, with 17 episodes previously directed, will be at the director’s chair. This film adaptation marks a pioneering step for an Indian streaming series transitioning to a cinematic release.

The upcoming production of the show will bring back its main actors, such as Pankaj Tripathi playing Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal portraying Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu taking on Munna Tripathi. Abhishek Banerjee has also been confirmed to reappear in his role as the Compounder.

After adhering to the theatrical release timeline, the movie will become available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video in over 240 countries following an eight-week exclusivity period. This decision follows the exceptional success of “Mirzapur” Season 3 on the platform, and the production of Season 4 is scheduled to commence post the film’s premiere.

Manish Menghani, head of content licensing at Prime Video India, expressed their pride in creating content tailored to viewers’ tastes and supporting local stories that resonate deeply. He noted how ‘Mirzapur,’ with its complex characters, memorable dialogues, and gripping plotline, has become a beloved series among today’s audience. As the show garners more praise, they are thrilled to bring it to the big screen, aiming to provide fans an exhilarating cinematic experience. Partnering once again with Excel Entertainment, who shares their creative vision, this step forward signifies a new, exciting chapter in the ‘Mirzapur’ saga as they venture into this new journey.

Excel Entertainment’s Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, who are responsible for the production, view this film as a chance to broaden the series’ horizons. “Reaching this significant milestone allows us to offer the authentic ‘Mirzapur’ experience to our viewers once more, but this time on the big screen. Over three successful seasons, this popular franchise has resonated with fans thanks to its compelling storytelling and unforgettable characters, such as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Bhaiya, and Munna Bhaiya. We’re confident that transforming such a cherished series into a film will result in an even more captivating viewing experience, enabling viewers to dive deeper into the world of ‘Mirzapur’ than ever before. We’re thrilled to work with Prime Video again and can’t wait to provide a cinematic adventure that will meet and exceed the expectations of our devoted fanbase,” the producers stated jointly.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to be associated with Excel Entertainment, a cinematic powerhouse that has graced us with gems like “Gully Boy,” India’s submission for the 2019 Oscars, and “Dahaad,” which garnered acclaim at the Berlinale Series. This year alone, their latest production, “Superboys of Malegaon,” has made waves, being screened at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival.
