Amazon MGM Studios Developing YA Sci-Fi Thriller ‘The Loneliest Girl in the Universe’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie lover with a soft spot for thought-provoking sci-fi stories and a deep appreciation for the written word, I am thrilled to hear that Amazon MGM Studios is developing “The Loneliest Girl in the Universe” into a feature film. The concept of being the only surviving crew member on a spaceship bound for a new planet, longing for human connection, resonates with me deeply. It’s a poignant and intriguing premise that promises to explore themes of isolation, love, and the human spirit.

Amazon’s MGM Studios is currently working on bringing the young adult novel “The Loneliest Girl in the Universe” to life as a movie production.

Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, known for their work on “Anyone but You,” “Fast X,” and the upcoming “Jackpot,” will team up with Katherine Langford for film production. Langford is famous for acting in Netflix’s popular YA series “13 Reasons Why.” Seldy Gray will manage development at Roth Kirschenbaum Films.

In “The Loneliest Girl in the Universe,” penned by Lauren James, we join Romy Silvers, the sole survivor aboard a spacecraft en route to a new planet, on her quest to create a new home for mankind. As stated in the summary, she is the most solitary soul in the universe until she learns about another spaceship that has taken off from Earth, carrying just one passenger – a boy named J. First published in the year 2017, this captivating novel was recognized with numerous award nominations including the Carnegie medal and was shortlisted for the STEAM Children’s Book Prize, an accolade honoring science in fiction.

At the film studio, the project is currently being worked on in its initial stages. Gary Dauberman’s treatment serves as the foundation for the script, which is being penned by Sarah Conradt-Kroehler. Conradt-Kroehler is represented by Gersh, Hopscotch Pictures, and Gang Tyre Ramer Brown & Passman. Wren James, the author behind “The Loneliest Girl in the Universe,” has penned several successful books. Not only is she a talented writer, but she also serves as the story consultant for seasons 2 and 3 of Netflix’s hit series “Heartstopper.” Some of her other popular works include “Last Seen Online,” “Green Rising,” and “The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker.” James is fortunate to be represented by CAA and Claire Wilson at RCW Literary Agency.
