Amazon MGM Buys U.K.’s Historic Bray Studios, Where ‘Rings of Power’ Season 2 Was Filmed

As a lifelong cinephile with a deep appreciation for the history of cinema, I am thrilled to hear about Amazon MGM Studios’ acquisition of Bray Film Studios in the U.K. This historic site holds a special place in filmmaking history, having been the location for countless iconic moments on screen for the past seven decades.

Amazon’s MGM Studios has announced plans to buy Bray Film Studios in the U.K., which they have been using as their production base for the second installment of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” series.

Amazon obtained its first physical U.K. studio, Bray, to create new and ongoing TV series and movies. Effective early 2022, Prime Video entered into a substantial long-term lease at Shepperton Studios. In the US, Amazon has owned The Culver Studios in California since previously.)

As a seasoned film industry professional with years of experience under my belt, I’m thrilled about the latest acquisition of Bray Film Studios, located about 26 miles from central London. This studio is not just another addition to the list, but a significant one that offers approximately 53,600 square feet of soundstage space across five stages, 77,400 square feet of workshops, 39,400 square feet of office space, 182,900 square feet of backlot, and an impressive 156,000 square feet of parking space.

“Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, shared that our creative hub in Bray, U.K., is dedicated to strengthening ties with the abundant pool of exceptional storytellers and creative talent based there. The acquisition of a studio steeped in history offers us the chance to generate more movies and TV shows in the U.K., as well as unlock various local benefits such as employment opportunities and skill development across all stages of production.”

Frank Burke, chairman of Bray Film Studios Ltd, expressed, “Bray Studios has held a significant role in British cinema history for over 70 years. During our tenure, my family and I, along with the team, have witnessed its revival and are immensely proud of our contribution to this legendary site. We’re thrilled to be transferring the studios to Amazon, whose dedication to quality and excellence aligns with ours. We believe they are ideally positioned to maintain the studio’s unique charm while upgrading the exceptional production areas for future filmmakers.”

At Bray Studios, situated in Water Oakley, Berkshire, filmmaking history stretches back to 1951 when Hammer Films established a permanent base there, building their studio on the property. Hammer produced numerous films during this time, including the iconic “Dracula” with Christopher Lee. After Hammer moved to Elstree in 1966, Bray Studios became renowned for creating and filming models and miniatures for Ridley Scott’s “Alien,” such as the Nostromo space ship. In the ’80s and ’90s, it was primarily used as a music venue, with the final rehearsal of the original Led Zeppelin band taking place there, as well as a pre-concert rehearsal for the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness. Following a lengthy hiatus, film production resumed in 2017 with the hit BBC series “Bodyguard,” followed by the Oscar-winning Elton John biopic “Rocketman.” The second season of “The Rings of Power” began filming at Bray Studios in October 2022.

Lisa Nandy, the U.K. culture secretary, expressed her appreciation for Bray Studios’ contribution to cinema over the past 70 years, from “Rocketman” to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” We are committed to fostering economic growth in our creative industries and providing diverse career opportunities across the U.K. This commitment is reinforced by Amazon MGM Studios’ investment in Bray Studios, ensuring its continued significance in our world-class filmmaking sector. This investment will bring substantial skills training and infrastructure development, solidifying our position as Europe’s premier film production hub.
