Amazon Bids on TikTok Before Ban

In a surprising move, Amazon is trying to acquire TikTok from its Chinese-based parent company, ByteDance, as the popular app faces potential banishment in the U.S., only three days prior to the planned prohibition.

2025 saw the enforcement of the TikTok divestment or ban law, which President Biden had signed in 2024. As a result, TikTok experienced a brief shutdown lasting approximately 12 hours and 20 minutes, starting from January 19, 2025.

Upon assuming office the very next day, President Trump issued an executive decree that extended the enforcing period of the ban by 270 days. Consequently, the revised “divest or be barred” deadline was set for April 5, 2025.

Since assuming office, Trump has frequently expressed his intention to finalize any pending deals before the specified deadlines to prevent an application from being prohibited.

On Wednesday, April 2, Amazon has put in a last-minute offer to buy the app.

As reported by The New York Times, an offer from Amazon was extended to Vice President JD Vance and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick through an official letter.

On the other hand, it appears that some parties participating in the discussions aren’t giving Amazon’s offer much consideration or weight.

On April 2nd, President Trump will confer with officials regarding the potential future of TikTok and attempting to negotiate a sale agreement with the China-based company before the deadline. Previously, ByteDance has expressed that it is not up for sale, in part due to concerns that the Chinese government might thwart such a deal.

Other businesses apart from Amazon might get involved with TikTok’s acquisition if the President finalizes the deal. In fact, Trump has hinted at Oracle possibly investing in the app earlier, along with numerous financial institutions.

Currently, Oracle manages the servers housing TikTok’s U.S. user data due to an arrangement with the company. In response to data security concerns raised by former President Trump during his tenure, TikTok’s U.S. Data Services team initiated Project Texas in 2022, with the goal of addressing these issues.
