As a long-time Netflix subscriber and avid fan of their innovative content, I must admit that this recent announcement has left me somewhat perplexed. For years, I’ve been captivated by the interactive shows and games they’ve offered, and it seems like we’re about to bid farewell to a significant portion of them.
For quite some time, Netflix has been striving to expand its control in the streaming world into the gaming industry by offering interactive TV programs and films, along with actual video games. However, after Netflix shut down its AAA game studio, Team Blue, it’s also been announced that they will be removing most of their interactive content at the end of November.
According to The Verge, out of the 24 interactive shows and movies currently streaming on Netflix, only four will remain as of December 1: “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend,” “Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls,” and “You vs. Wild.” Some of the shows that are leaving include “WWE’s Escape the Undertaker,” “Triviaverse,” as well as animated specials featuring “Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous,” “Boss Baby,” and “Carmen Sandiego.
In a statement to The Verge, Netflix representative Chrissy Kelleher noted that the interactive technology has been effective, but it’s becoming a constraint as we shift our technological emphasis towards other fields.
How might Netflix’s gaming plans unfold in the future? This week, Mike Verdu – a founding member of Netflix Games – was appointed as the Vice President of Game AI at Netflix. In this role, he expressed his belief that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will significantly speed up game development and create unique gaming experiences that will captivate, amuse, and inspire players. This announcement follows recent layoffs of Team Blue’s developers.
Underneath its brand, Netflix continues to house several video game development studios, one of them being the creator of the upcoming AAA title, “Tales from The Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game,” set for release on consoles and PCs by early 2025.
