As a seasoned connoisseur of European cinema, I must say that the upcoming productions in Spain are truly captivating! The story behind Massiel’s triumph at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1968, as depicted in “La Canción”, promises to be an enthralling journey filled with intrigue and chance events.
2025 will see Movistar Plus+, Spain’s leading streaming and pay TV service provider, unveil four original scripted series. Among them is a unique special about renowned filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, as well as the mother-centric dramatic comedy “Yo siempre a veces,” produced by award-winning creators Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo of Suma Content – their bustling Madrid production company.
Additionally, “Los sin nombre” (The Nameless Ones) by Pau Freixas and Filmax is in the works. This series is a spin-off from the movie “La Canción,” co-created by Pepe Coira and Fran Araujo, who have also worked on “Hierro” and “Rapa.” Furthermore, an espionage thriller titled “El Centro” is being developed as well.
News arrives about a new series as Movistar Plus+ secured screenings in September at both Venice and San Sebastián. Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The New Years” was showcased in the series selection of Venice, alongside Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ Series “Disclaimer,” Joe Wright’s “M. Son Of The Century,” and Thomas Vinterberg’s “Families Like Ours.
Alauda Ruiz de Azua’s “Querer” was acclaimed as the best Spanish series of the year at San Sebastian, similar to how “The New Years” was celebrated at Venice. Additionally, the third series produced by Movistar Plus+ in collaboration with The Mediapro Studio, titled “Celeste,” received warm reception during its grand screening at San Sebastián’s Velodrome.
Following major soccer games or a Carlos Alcaraz final, our original shows become the most popular content on Movistar Plus+. Interestingly, four out of every three clients prefer to watch our original productions.
On Wednesday, Domingo Corral, content director at Movistar Plus+, shared insights with a group of journalists, highlighting that the most popular shows this year were the final season of the grittier crime-mystery thriller “Rapa,” which concluded recently, and “Luis Enrique: You Have No Clue,” a docu-mini series offering a personal glimpse into the life of the Spanish PSG soccer club manager, known for his brusque interactions with the media.
Movistar Plus+ series consistently exhibit shared characteristics: “a high level of artistic and production quality, a strong connection with viewers, an auteur’s perspective yet a wide appeal,” Corral noted. “I believe these shows can be both commercially successful and innovative, offering something unique and non-repetitive.
Consequently, Sorogoyen and Ruiz de Azua are set to direct films for Movistar Plus+; “El Ser Querido” featuring Javier Bardem and “Domingos” by Ruiz de Azua, respectively. These projects are included in its inaugural lineup of “event auteur” productions.
2025’s lineup of new titles on Movistar Plus+ further strengthens the creative and production alliance between Movistar Plus+ and Suma Content, the brainchild of Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. This development solidifies Araujo and Coira as a prominent writing duo in Spain. It’s another achievement for director Alejandro Marín, who made waves with his solo feature debut “Love and Revolution.” Additionally, it marks the second collaboration between Movistar Plus+, Filmax from Barcelona, and Pau Freixas.
Pedro Almodovar Special
In 2025, Pedro Almodóvar is expected to play a significant role in Movistar Plus+ productions, according to Corral. The special created by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo is scheduled to premiere around March 2025, along with “The Room Next Door.” Movistar Plus+ holds the exclusive first TV window rights for Spain for both shows. Almodóvar himself will contribute to this project, as well as actors from some of his films. The 2025 Academy Awards are also set for March 2. Corral remarked that the format would be highly original, but the question remains whether they can replicate its success.
A New Los Javis Production: ‘Yo Siempre a Veces’
In Spain, Ambrossi and Calvo, famously known as Los Javis, will also be producing a dramatic comedy. This series revolves around the struggles of a single mother who is pregnant, then raising a toddler in Barcelona. The creators and writers are Marta Bassols and Marta Loza, whose character development skills are highly praised by Corral. Claudia Costafreda, a respected figure in the creative industry, will be directing this production. She has co-created “Cardo” and worked on “Perfect Life” and “Elite,” among others. The series is still in its early stages and expected to air towards the end of 2025. It is being set up under Los Javis’ Suma Content.
“La Canción”: Lifting the Lid on Spain’s Dramatic Eurovision Win in 1968
Starting from the late 1950s, Spain’s administration focused one key aim on joining the European Economic Community. However, by 1961, all Spain had achieved was participating in the European Song Contest. As Corral proposed recently, winning this contest became almost a national priority. The film “La Canción,” created by Araujo and Coira, aims to reveal the real events surrounding Massiel’s unexpected victory in 1968, a win “immortalized by a catchy chorus, a legendary singer, political determination, and an extraordinary sequence of fortunate incidents,” according to Movistar Plus+. Marín is responsible for directing; Buendía Estudios (“Offworld”) takes on production; Patrick Criado (“Riot Police”), Alex Brendemühl (“Red Queen”), Carolina Yuste (“Saben aquell”), and Marcel Borràs (“El Inmortal”) are involved in the project.
*A Series Spin-Off of the Movie Which Changed Spanish Cinema: ‘Los Sin Nombre’
Vicente Canales, who was a young sales agent at Filmax back then, vividly remembers the astonishing crowd of buyers during the market debut of “Los sin nombre” at Italy’s Mifed trade fair. This was the first feature by Jaume Balagueró, whose film not only culminated in one of the most haunting acts of psychological horror ever seen in Spanish cinema but also pioneered auteur genre production in Spain. Following suit were Balagueró’s own “REC” and J.A. Bayona’s “The Orphanage”.
This psychological thriller series spinoff, previously announced by Filmax and inspired by Ramsey Campbell’s original novel, is being developed by Pau Freixas, known for “Red Band Society” and “You Shall Not Lie.” The cast includes Miren Ibarguren from “Arde Madrid,” Rodrigo de la Serna of “Money Heist,” and Milena Smit from “The Platform 2.
*”El Centro”: An Espionage Thriller
David Ulloa and David Moreno, the creative minds behind the Spanish mob thriller “El Immortal,” which was a contender at Canneseries, are joining forces again for “El Centro.” This project is a collaboration with Spain’s CNI intelligence service, offering a realistic and researched portrayal of the lives and work of its members. It’s a fiction thriller featuring an impressive Spanish cast headed by Juan Diego Botto (“On the Fringe”), Tristán Ulloa (“Berlin”) and Elena Martín (“Creatura”). Production on this series commenced last week, Corral announced. The production company Fonte Films, known for “Mugaritz,” is producing alongside Movistar Plus+.
*”La Vida Breve,” (Movistar Plus+)
As a history enthusiast, I can’t wait to witness the opening of the South International Series Festival, where the intriguing dramedy, “The Merry Monarch,” unfolds. This play revolves around King Luis I, Spain’s shortest-reigning monarch, who was known for his libertine ways. In 1724, he married Louise Élisabeth d’Orléans, a woman rumored to have broken social norms by belching, passing wind, and even undressing in public to clean windows with her dress! This production promises equal doses of comedy and court conspiracy drama, featuring the talented Javier Gutiérrez (“Below Zero”) and Leonor Watling (“Talk to Her”). The creative minds behind cult series “Reyes de la Noche,” Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor, have masterminded this production. Movistar Plus+ is producing with “Elite’s” Zeta Studios.
