All3Media CEO Jane Turton Discusses What Drove RedBird IMI in Its $1.45 Billion Purchase of TV Giant: ‘Opportunity for Growth,’ Scale and Portfolio

As a seasoned media enthusiast with a knack for deciphering industry trends, I find Jane Turton’s journey at All3Media truly captivating. Her ability to steer the company from 19 production labels to 40, while maintaining consistent growth and appealing to major players like RedBird IMI, is nothing short of remarkable.

At the much-awaited keynote during Mipcom’s 40th anniversary in Cannes, All3Media CEO Jane Turton delved into the factors that led Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird IMI to invest $1.45 billion in acquiring the TV production powerhouse responsible for “The Traitors.

During a chat with Cynthia Littleton, co-editor-in-chief of EbMaster, at Mipcom in Cannes on October 21st, Turton expressed his viewpoint. He believes the key factor is the IP (Intellectual Property) because people are seeking expansion. They’re interested in a property that has been consistently increasing and is managed by a team that understands profit margins and other financial aspects. Additionally, he finds the scope, size, variety, and depth of the portfolio to be attractive.

Turton proposed that RedBird IMI perceived potential expansion with All3Media as well. As he put it, “You don’t invest in something expecting it to remain stagnant or even decline…

The CEO, who took over All3Media in 2015 and expanded the label count from 19 to 40, openly acknowledged that the sales process was “tiring.

It feels much more pleasant to stay detached from the proceedings. We are quite certain that we have a compelling storyline and a strategic vision extending into the future, guiding us towards tomorrow.

Turton shared insights about the strategies she’s employed since becoming the company leader, as well as highlighting patterns in both scripted and unscripted content. She mentioned “The Traitors,” a successful U.K. competition series that has won an Emmy, has been adapted into 30 versions so far, and recently got renewed for two more seasons on Peacock, with Alan Cumming as the host.

Despite primarily being recognized for its successful unscripted shows like “The Traitors” and “Squid Game: The Challenge,” Turton indicated that All3Media is focusing on increasing its scripted content. “We’ve identified areas where we can improve, gaps in our catalog,” said Turton. “We’ve boosted our scripted offerings significantly and we plan to continue doing so. In fact, the upcoming announcements from us might feature a number of scripted productions, labels, or units.

Turton noted that the move by streamers into original content several years ago provided a significant boost to specific sub-genres in scripted programming. He further explained that large global platforms such as Netflix have opened up an opportunity that may not have existed previously.

Does local drama have its place? I strongly believe so! I think there’s a distinction between stories that are globally relevant and those with universal resonance. It seems to me this goes beyond mere wordplay. Personally, I strongly feel that compelling local dramas can touch hearts across the globe.

Additionally, she referred to All3Media’s top-tier documentary films such as “Ernest Shackleton’s ‘Endurance,'” which debuted at the BFI London Film Festival and was screened in cinemas across the U.K., as a case of an unscripted production that possessed compelling narrative aspects.

The upcoming documentary, created with artificial intelligence, is set to air on Disney+. It chronicles an historic Antarctic expedition led by an explorer, also delving into the quest to locate a sunken ship in 2022.

Turton commented that the key factor was the exceptional storytelling, further noting that this documentary was unexpectedly excellent.

The filmmakers were granted permission by the BFI and National Geographic Film Society to utilize authentic footage from the 1914 expedition. They’ve crafted an exceptional documentary using this vintage, colorized black-and-white footage, along with fresh footage from 2022. Additionally, they employed advanced AI technology to recreate the voices of Shackleton and his team, who were heard reading passages from their diaries written during that time, using small snippets of their original voices as a basis.

The keynote was a part of the “C-Suite Conversations” series, which occurred during the market’s opening afternoon in collaboration with EbMaster. Other notable participants in this series include Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, and Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
