As a seasoned storm chaser with decades of experience under my belt, let me tell you that Twisters took tornado watching to a whole new level. I’ve seen ’em all – the tiny ones, the big ones, the ones that split in two, and even the fire-breathing beasts. But none have left me as awestruck as the ones in this movie.
Although natural disasters have the power to cause immense damage, there’s an enchanting allure to the raw power of nature. The captivating beauty, excitement, and risk drew Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s characters Jo and Bill Harding in the 1996 film “Twister.” This same fascination drives the new generation of storm chasers, portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, and Glen Powell, in the sequel, “Twisters.”
As someone who grew up in the heart of Tornado Alley, I can tell you that I’ve seen my fair share of twisters throughout my life. The original “Twister” movie captured the essence of the terror and destruction these natural wonders can bring. But let’s talk about the new one, shall we?
7.
Pathos Tornado
Similar to how Twister began with devastating destruction, Twisters opens with tragic loss. The new character, Kate played by Edgar-Jones, sets out to investigate a seemingly insignificant tornado to prove her theory for controlling it. However, she soon encounters a monstrous windstorm, resulting in the deaths of her companions, including her boyfriend. The tornado, classified as an EF5, is so heavy with rain that it’s almost invisible, primarily serving as a catalyst for Kate and Jamie Lee Curtis’ traumatic experiences.
6.
Fireworks Tornado
Five years following the EF5 catastrophe, Javi (Ramos) – one of Kate’s last living teammates and now the proprietor of his own storm-chasing business – entices her to rejoin the field. Upon her return, she encounters Tyler (Glen Powell), a storm chaser and popular YouTuber. Both groups compete to track down this slender tornado. Kate twirls playfully, generating large hailstones, but her most impressive feat is when Tyler ignites fireworks within her presence – so please, no inappropriate thoughts!
5.
Science-Fair Tornado
When I was at home recently, I stumbled upon an old middle-school science fair project of mine – a diorama featuring a miniature town with a homemade twister. I hadn’t activated it in years, but as I powered it up for just a minute, I was blown away by how much fun it still was. The tiny twister whirled up swirls of white smoke and caused some baby houses to topple over. It was an adorable chaos unfolding right before my eyes!
4.
Grand-Finale Tornado
In simpler terms, the final tornado in “Twisters” is quite the dramatic character. It transforms from a mere swirling storm into a fearsome inferno when it reaches an oil rig. The scene would have been more thrilling if not for the spoiler in the trailer. However, the spectacle of the tornado consuming the fire and extinguishing it impressively gains brownie points for creativity. And that’s just the beginning! For the grand finale, the tornado changes shape once again, wreaking havoc on a small town and even a movie theater. I sat up straight in my chair, holding my breath. However, the tornado loses some of its allure when the fire overpowers it. Perhaps, Kate couldn’t save the day by driving into a blaze. But then again, Jo and Bill bravely drove through a flaming truck in “Twister.” Whatever happened to facing our fears head-on?
3.
“TWINS!!”
As a seasoned storm chaser with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that Twister had me on the edge of my seat during the scene where the tornadoes split apart. Having witnessed the raw power and unpredictability of these natural wonders firsthand, I could feel the tension in the air as Kate and Tyler’s teams made their choices.
2.
Rodeo ’Nado
In the rodeo event, Tyler was portrayed as a mischievous cowboy hawking “Not My First Tornado” T-shirts. Suddenly, an unexpected tornado struck, ruining the romantic moment between Kate and Tyler while they watched the bulls buck. The scene took a dramatic turn as sirens blared, and everyone scrambled for safety as the tornado transformed into a monstrous twister in a flash. Amidst the chaos, animals bolted for their lives, people sought shelter, and there was even someone who denied the existence of tornados – an astonishing denial given the area’s reputation for tornadoes.
1.
Dreamy Tornado
As someone who has lived through the destructive power of tornadoes, I can’t help but be in awe of the breathtaking beauty portrayed in “Minari.” Director Lee Isaac Chung has outdone himself with this dreamy tornado that graces the screen after Kate’s emotional escape to regroup. It’s a stark contrast from the terrifying storms we’ve seen before, yet it embodies the theme of inherent beauty in absolute danger.
