As a seasoned gamer with countless hours under my belt, I must say that the Purgatory Island event in Modern Warfare 3 has taken my Call of Duty experience to a whole new level. This sandbox mode is unlike anything I’ve encountered before, offering a unique grind for camos and challenges that keeps me coming back for more.
In Modern Warfare 3, the eerie atmosphere of The Haunting has arrived, along with it, the enigmatic Purgatory Island. For Call of Duty players, this is an unprecedented mode that provides a playground for earning camouflages and completing tasks. Additionally, this arrival brings about the Purgatory Island event, which includes numerous challenges and rewards.

Reach Torment Level Two Challenge
To advance to Torment Level 2, all you need is to secure kills while avoiding death in the Purgatory Island mode. This achievement will boost your XP from kills, but be warned that each level of Torment also brings a significant disadvantage. For instance, reaching Torment level 3 in my gaming session kept me constantly visible on other players’ radar. Keep an eye on your Torment level’s progress using the distinct UI element provided.
Spend five minutes outside the safe zone challenge
This task is simpler in theory than in practice, since it involves staying unharmed outside the secure zones on Purgatory Island for a full five minutes without harming any other players. However, this rule also implies that no one can harm you, as such actions would reset your timer. I’d recommend choosing a peaceful location, using the Ghost skill, and passing some time by playing Solitaire.
Get 50 Mercenary Kills using the Terriball or Vehicle challenge
As a seasoned gamer, let me tell you this: The Terriball is quite a challenge, and I’d genuinely advise opting for the vehicle route in this scenario. This peculiar… entity will be explained further down the line. Knocking off those NPC mercenaries with your vehicle seems like the most effective strategy. They tend to parachute from helicopters, which can be time-consuming due to all the gunfire, but you’ve got plenty of time, considering each map has a generous 2-hour time limit.
Commend 5 Operators challenge
Interacting with other players in the designated ‘safe zones’ on Purgatory island is a breeze! Simply wait for some players to arrive, approach them, and you’ll be given an opportunity to compliment them at no cost. This act rewards them with 50XP, and if they reciprocate, it could potentially benefit you as well.
Get five Operator kills in vehicles challenge
This one is… easyish. You just need to get five player kills whilst in a vehicle, and that means either by being a passenger and shooting out, or via the tried and tested method of vehicular manslaughter.
Get three Operator kills with the Terriball challenge
Achieving three Operator kills with the Terraball isn’t a walk in the park. You’ll often find many players eager for a trade of kills using this item, and frankly, I’d jump at the chance too. However, securing these kills organically will be quite challenging. The Terraball, an unusual artifact, can appear on the Purgatory Island map randomly or drop from Scare Packages. To utilize these mysterious orbs, you can shoot, melee, or simply run into them. Upon interaction, they’ll fly off and instantly eliminate the first Operator they strike. I’ve given it a try, but success still eludes me.
Teleport 15 times using Portals challenge
Portals are scattered at various spots on the map, whisking you off randomly elsewhere on the map. They’re quite useful for making a swift exit. You can find them by scanning for big red spheres upon landing, or by checking for an egg-shaped icon on your mini-map.
Pilot the Flying Shipment challenge
In simpler terms, during the game, a map similar to Shipment will occasionally appear on the island at an unspecified location. Players can drive or fly onto this map, but only the first player to reach it can do so. Alternatively, you can wait for someone else to land and engage in combat. This flying version of the shipment is quite unusual, indeed.
Complete all challenges… challenge
Completing every challenge on Purgatory Island will earn you the ‘Cloud Watching’ camouflage as your event completion reward. This one is quite self-explanatory.
