All of the Avatar Sequel Announcements: A Timeline

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a soft spot for cinematic epics, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia upon hearing the latest updates about the Avatar sequels. Having grown up during the initial release of the first film, it feels like revisiting a cherished childhood memory, albeit one that has been stretched out over a decade.

Filming has commenced for four sequels of the 2009 CGI adventure film, “Avatar,” directed by James Cameron. This time around, Cameron is serious about delivering as promised – no more teasing or hints! Over the past decade, he’s shared tidbits about the upcoming movies, interspersed with occasional releases of Titanic or criticisms of Alien: Covenant. But this time, he’s making good on his word. The sequels, collectively known as “The Avatar Sequels,” will have a whopping $1 billion budget – that’s three and a half Lord of the Rings trilogies, six Wonder Woman films, 66 Hurt Lockers, or 250 Moonlights! On August 9th, Cameron, Sam Worthington, and Zoe Saldaña announced at D23 Expo that the third Avatar film will be titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” Here’s a timeline of all the Avatar promises that once seemed uncertain, but are now on track to be fulfilled. You’ll see it for yourself!

On January 7, 2010, just a few days following the milestone of Avatar grossing $1 billion, director James Cameron confirmed plans for a sequel during a screening event in Los Angeles, stating to the audience, “Yes, there will be another.”

On January 14, 2010, he indicated that there won’t only be one more — there will be multiple follow-ups. He shares that he had a planned narrative from the beginning, with some scenes in “Avatar” purposely kept due to their relevance to the sequel. In essence, he considers it as a two or three film series, considering it from a business perspective.

2010, February 16th: Not only are we expecting more visits to Pandora, but also a book! As James Cameron put it, “If it proved profitable, I’d write a book. There are aspects you can explore through books that cannot be achieved with films.” Your school librarian from middle school would likely concur.

On August 7, 2010, it was announced that Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 would be shot consecutively. According to the producer, this approach is practical due to the complex nature of these productions. He explained, “We can save all the capture and then go back and handle the cameras.” However, his main concern is the prequel novel. He stated, “I didn’t want to produce a subpar novelization filled with fabrications.”

On March 7, 2010, it was noted that James Cameron lost the Academy Award. Later, he expressed disappointment as he felt the Oscars no longer recognize films like his, specifically “grand, visual cinema.”

On April 21, 2010: James Cameron revealed that the sequel to Avatar would delve deeply into the oceanic landscapes of Pandora. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, he explained, “In the second film, I’m aiming to develop a fresh environment and setting within Pandora, and I will be concentrating on the underwater world of Pandora, which will be as rich, diverse, and imaginative as the rainforest, but it won’t just be another rainforest.”

As a longtime fan of James Cameron’s groundbreaking work, I am thrilled to hear that “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” are finally moving forward! After the incredible success of the first film, I have eagerly awaited the continuation of the story set in Pandora. Given Cameron’s dedication to creating immersive and visually stunning movies, I have no doubt that these sequels will be nothing short of spectacular.

On May 7, 2012, James Cameron didn’t just announce Avatar 2 and Avatar 3; he also revealed that there would be an Avatar 4. In a conversation with the New York Times, he made it clear that he was fully committed to the Avatar universe, stating, “I’m not interested in developing anything else. I’m in the Avatar business. Period. That’s it. I’m making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, possibly Avatar 4, and I have no plans to produce other people’s movies for them.” He officially confirmed this in August 2013.

In December 2013, it was announced that the films Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4 would begin filming in New Zealand. The exact dates are not yet certain, but it’s expected to happen relatively soon. When you record this in your planner, consider using a pencil or an erasable pen, just in case there are any changes.

April 12, 2014: Cameron says they’re in preproduction! Go ahead and set those iCal alerts.

On January 14, 2015, I’m sharing some news about “Avatar” sequels: “Avatar 2”, “Avatar 3”, and “Avatar 4”. There’s been a slight pushback in their release dates, but don’t worry, it’s just a couple of years. Ideally, we might see them in 2017. So, if you’ve got these movies marked on your Google Calendar, just make a small adjustment to reflect this minor delay. It’s not a significant setback; we’re still looking forward to the return of Pandora!

On April 28, 2015, it was revealed that James Cameron wasn’t just planning to release Avatar 2, 3, and 4. You might have thought we could escape without an Avatar 5, but think again! In fact, he and his team have written five complete scripts, so Avatar 5 is also in the works.

1st of January, 2016: He’s running out of energy. What can be done to complete it? According to The Wrap, the production of “Avatar 2” has been put on hold indefinitely.

On April 14, 2016, Cameron speaks to a Comic Con crowd, saying he’ll catch up with them again in the world of Pandora. He’s back, y’all! And what a treat we have coming: Cameron plans to release a new Avatar movie almost every other Christmas starting from 2018. Specifically, Avatar 2 is set for release on December 25, 2018, followed by Avatar 3 on December 25, 2020, Avatar 4 on December 25, 2022, and Avatar 5 on December 25, 2023.

On September 8, 2016: Sam Worthington’s career in Christian films is thriving, Zoe Saldana is currently with the Guardians of the Galaxy, while James Cameron continues to develop the Avatar movies. He’ll give us these when they’re ready. Essentially, Cameron says, we haven’t fixed a specific release date yet, but if necessary, we will adjust it. What matters most to him is not the initial release but the regularity of the film releases in the sequence.

22nd April, 2017: Shady is back in action! Spread the word: Cameron has commenced filming with a revised schedule. Here’s what you can look forward to: “Avatar 2” on 18th December, 2020; “Avatar 3” on 17th December, 2021; “Avatar 4” on 20th December, 2024; and “Avatar 5” on 19th December, 2025.

On September 25, 2017, it was announced that seven years after the original release, filming for the first Avatar sequel has commenced! Fox has revealed that the first sequel will hit theaters on December 18, 2020. The second sequel, Avatar 3, follows a year later, with the final two installments set for releases in December 2024 and 2025. The Avatar Sequels aren’t just about returning to Pandora; they are about James Cameron’s continued creative journey.

On May 7, 2019, it’s been exactly 588 days since this significant timeline received an update. Now, I’m back with essential updates! (You believe the Avatar sequels are your friends? You merely embraced the Avatar sequels. I was shaped by them!)

Following the Disney-Fox merger, Disney has unveiled a comprehensive release plan for its upcoming films. Notably, there will be four new Avatar movies set in the captivating universe of Pandora, with each sequel scheduled to debut every other year starting from 2021 during the pre-Christmas weekend. Here’s the lineup: December 17, 2021 for the next installment, followed by Avatar 3 on December 22, 2023, Avatar 4 on December 19, 2025, and finally, Avatar 5 on December 17, 2027. The titles for these films could potentially be Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa, though this has yet to be confirmed. Time will tell if Marvel can top that! (It’s quite ambitious of James Cameron to assume we’ll still have a livable planet in 2027, one might say!)

On March 17, 2020, things had been going remarkably well from spring 2019 up until spring 2020 – that is, until the coronavirus interrupted the progress of Avatar sequels’ production. Despite James Cameron getting into a minor feud with a diver, which added a fun and somewhat trivial twist to events, the virus forced cities worldwide to shut down, including halting production on the Avatar sequels. Jon Landau, one of the producers, informed the New Zealand Herald that they had to postpone production: “We’ve delayed it. We were supposed to arrive Friday night with a team and resume work, but we decided to hold off and continue working from Los Angeles instead, planning to return later than initially planned.” During this pause in filming, Weta Digital would carry on creating the movie’s digital effects.

On April 2, 2020, numerous directors and movies are encountering disruptions due to the worldwide shutdown, as release dates and premiere times are being rescheduled. Disney has published an updated schedule for its films, confirming that the first Avatar sequel is still set to debut on December 17, 2021.

On May 11, 2020: It’s important to understand that James Cameron’s work on the Avatar sequels is time-bound. The clock is ticking! In an update to Empire, he voiced his concerns about the production shutdown, stating, “It’s causing significant delays here. I eagerly want to resume work on Avatar, but unfortunately, we can’t due to state emergency laws and regulations.” From his home in Malibu, Cameron shared that he was planning to travel halfway around the world for a shoot phase when the lockdown halted those plans. “We were about to start shooting in New Zealand, so those plans have been postponed. We’re doing our best to get back to it as soon as possible.”

On May 22, 2020, the news was announced: we’re returning, returning, returning, returning, returning! Yes, you guessed it. After much anticipation, producer Jon Landau has shared that filming for Avatar sequels will resume in June. His excitement is palpable as he writes, “Our Avatar sets are all prepped and ready – we can hardly wait to get back to New Zealand next week!” He also posted a picture of a command vessel and a jetboat, hinting at the thrilling journey ahead.

No matter what challenges arise – be it storms, floods, or an unprecedented worldwide health crisis, the long-awaited premiere of the first ‘Avatar’ sequel is set for December 17, 2021. Keep a close eye on this spot!

On July 23, 2020, it was announced that Disney has decided to delay the release of all upcoming Avatar sequels by a year. As a result, the premiere of Avatar 2 is now scheduled for December 2022.

In August 2020, while not directly linked to an Avatar sequel revelation, Joe Rogan’s heartfelt comparison of a real individual to the character Na’vi, as envisioned by Cameron, is certainly something worth checking out.

On September 10, 2020: Sigourney Weaver enthusiastically signals approval as she executes a motion capture stunt, boosting our certainty that the movie production is most assuredly underway.

On September 27, 2020: The production of Avatar 2 is completely done, and we’re almost there with Avatar 3. James Cameron shared this update during a private conversation with Arnold Schwarzenegger at the 2020 Austrian World Summit, as reported by Deadline. He stated that “We have finished Avatar 2 entirely, and we’re about 95% done with Avatar 3. We can operate, we can shoot, and we’re able to live relatively normally here. We were fortunate, so I don’t foresee any obstacles that would prevent us from completing, and finishing both films.”

The director chose not to disclose further information regarding the sequels, preferring instead to maintain an air of suspense and excitement: “I’d rather keep the details under wraps. I think it’s all about the enigma and the grand unveiling.” And I share your enthusiasm for Avatar!

On March 11, 2022: Zoe Saldana admits to tearing up during the initial 20 minutes of the forthcoming Avatar sequel.

On the 27th of April, 2022: Hooray! Long-waiting fans can finally catch a glimpse of the first teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel. The film now has an official title – “Avatar: The Way of Water”. Producer Jon Landau announced that this trailer will be premiered in cinemas on Friday, May 6th, before the screening of “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.”

On May 9, 2022: The resurgence of Seapunk! Just three days after its theater premiere, the initial teaser trailer for “The Way of Water” has made a splash on YouTube.

On July 4, 2022, Cameron shares with Empire that he could potentially hand over directorial duties for the third or fourth film in the Avatar universe, titled Pandora-verse. According to Cameron, production on Avatar 3 is definite, but whether or not Avatar 4 and 5 will be made may hinge on market trends and audience reception.

On September 23, 2022, the classic film Avatar is set to make its comeback in cinemas, as a prelude to the much-anticipated sequel. Additionally, a fresh trailer for the original movie will be unveiled.

On August 30, 2022, in an interview with Elizabeth Banks for Interview Magazine, Sigourney Weaver praises the unusual nature of her character in the upcoming film. “This is the most extreme transformation I’ve ever had to undertake,” she states. “If Jim Cameron didn’t know me so well, I don’t think he would have cast me as such a quirky role. To portray this character, I needed to approach my performance in a completely new way, focusing heavily on physicality.” Weaver is also self-assured about her physical prowess in the movie. “I was older than most of the other actors, and we had to perform parkour,” she explains. “We had to do burpees. We had to free-dive. My husband is from Hawaii and he’s an avid swimmer and body surfer, so we trained together, and we both managed to hold our breath for six and a half minutes at one point.” Sigourney Weaver prepares to demonstrate her swimming skills in the upcoming film, The Way of Water.

September 6, 2022: It is now officially 100 days until The Way of Water opens in theaters.

On November 7, 2022, Cameron shared with Total Film that an unproduced Avatar sequel named Avatar: The Higher Ground was abandoned. This script, spanning 130 pages, included Na’vi characters engaging in zero-gravity combat using bows and arrows, but it didn’t align well enough with the established rules of Avatar, as per Cameron. Many aspects of this discarded project have been incorporated into upcoming Avatar sequels, while the sections focusing on the narrative bridge between the first and second films are now being released as a graphic novel on December 6.

On November 30, 2022, during his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, director James Cameron revealed that roughly 80-90% of Avatar 3 has been completed. Additionally, due to the aging of the child actors, a handful of scenes for Avatar 4 have also already been filmed.

On December 10, 2022, James Cameron discloses in an interview with French publication 20 Minutes that the upcoming movie Avatar 3 will present a novel tribe among the Na’vi – the Ash people. Moreover, he hints that viewers can anticipate a more sinister aspect of the Na’vi characters since they will serve as the main adversaries within the film’s narrative.

On December 16, 2022: The wide release of Avatar: The Way of Water takes place, but director James Cameron is already planning ahead. He provides an update on the sequels’ status, acknowledging that some questions are left unanswered in Avatar 2. “You could call it sequel bait,” he tells Entertainment Weekly, “but I’m not trying to justify a sequel. We’ve already filmed the other movie; I don’t need to convince anyone.” To clarify his statement, he references what Worthington said. “I enjoy Stranger Things, but they give off the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school, but they look like they’re 27,” he jokes. The director also hints at a time leap, particularly on “page 35 of the script for movie 4.” He adds mysteriously, “We’ll jump as many years as we need to.” However, it’s not just time that is expanding in the Avatar sequels. “Each movie will introduce audiences to new clans and cultures on Pandora,” Landau explains. “Once a character is introduced, they become part of the ongoing development. We simply build upon it. So, you can expect to see the Metkayina clan you meet in this movie in future movies. There are other clans we’ll introduce in movie 3 that will appear in movie 4 and so on.”

On December 17, 2022, Edie Falco, an actor in Avatar 2, appeared on The View and expressed her surprise as she believed the movie had already been released and underperformed since she hadn’t heard about it after filming four years prior. “So I thought, ‘Oh well,'” Falco stated. She now knows that the movie is out, but is unsure if she will be in Avatar 3.

On January 6, 2023, I sat down with Chris Wallace on his show and shared some exciting news about my upcoming ‘Avatar’ sequels. I announced that ‘Avatar 3’ is already completed, while ‘Avatar 4’ has partial footage and both scripts are written. The immense success of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, surpassing $1.5 billion worldwide, indicates that the upcoming films will move forward as planned. In fact, with the movie’s earnings likely to cross our break-even point in the coming days, it seems I can’t escape this commitment – I’m set to bring you more ‘Avatar’ adventures for the next six to seven years! We’ll soon be meeting with top Disney executives to discuss the strategy for ‘Avatar 3’. As we speak, my team is busy with post-production on the CG work for the upcoming film. I can’t wait to continue this journey and create a captivating saga that will span multiple films.

On June 13, 2023: The release dates for the Avatar sequels are being extended over a ten-year period, with the final installment now set to hit theaters in 2031. This delay is likely due to the assumption that by then, humans may have reached real-life Pandora, making the concept of the films obsolete. The first sequel, Avatar 3, will now be shown on December 19, 2025, instead of its previous date of December 20, 2024. Avatar 4 is rescheduled for December 21, 2029, as opposed to the initial release date of December 18, 2026. Finally, Avatar 5 has been moved from its original planned release on December 22, 2028, to December 19, 2031. Producer Jon Landau shared on Twitter that each film is a significant project requiring ample time for quality and audiences’ expectations. He added that the team can’t wait to bring us back to Pandora in December 2025, and we eagerly anticipate driving our flying cars to get there!

On February 5, 2024, James Cameron expressed confidence that the Avatar films may continue beyond his lifetime. “We’ve completed the scripts for movie five, and I have ideas for six and seven, although I expect to pass the torch at that point,” the director shared with People. The idea of an Avatar franchise without Cameron initially seems unrealistic, but considering the unexpected success of Avatar 2, it’s not entirely implausible. As Avatar producer Jon Landau put it, “There are more stories to tell. We didn’t have to come up with these stories; he [Cameron] has them, and we’ve laid out the plotlines across all four sequels.”

On August 9, 2024, we bid farewell to “The Seed Bearer.” At the D23 Expo, James Cameron, Sam Worthington, and Zoe Saldaña revealed that the third Avatar film will be titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” Cameron teased us with the introduction of new habitats, along with a character that will surely elicit both love and hatred.
