For a brief period, Bungie is offering Destiny 2’s extensive expansions at no cost to the players, giving them an opportunity to experience all that the game has to offer without having to pay anything upfront.
On July 15th, the latest expansion for the looter-shooter game, titled “The Edge of Fate,” will be released on all platforms. This update not only includes a brand new location called Kepler and a variety of fresh weapons, but Bungie is also using it as a chance to overhaul several progression systems from their very foundation.
In other words, the sandbox we have now will experience significant changes once Edge of Fate arrives, but these structural adjustments will be available to everyone for free. However, you’ll need to make a purchase to access the new campaign and any accompanying gear.
That being the case, now’s as good a time as any to jump in.
Destiny 2 Expansion open access details
Per Bungie’s explanation in their July 3 blog post:
From July 8th through July 22nd, Destiny 2’s existing expansions will be accessible at no cost across all compatible platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Microsoft Store, and the Epic Games Store.
Furthermore, you can enjoy all three current episodes at no cost on all compatible platforms until July 15th. Plus, any currencies, equipment, titles, achievements, and cosmetic items you earn during the open access period will be permanently yours.
As a passionate player, I’m thrilled to share that during the open-access period, all expansions (usually purchased) will be offered free of charge!

- The Final Shape
It’s important to mention that this promotion does not offer any content from before the Forsaken expansion, such as Curse of Osiris or Warmind. These additional features have been removed and are no longer accessible, much like the original Red War campaign, which led to some legal issues for Bungie.
