All-New Venom is Reuniting with the Man Who Rewrote the Rules for Symbiote Heroes

Marvel’s All-New Venom is teaming up with one of the greatest symbiote superheroes of all time.

A sneak peek at Marvel Comics’ fresh take on Venom #7 finds readers smack in the heart of Central Park, where Mary Jane Watson and Flash Thompson are reconnecting for a belated chat. Unbeknownst to MJ, Flash has been watching her from a distance, a situation she doesn’t find appealing. However, it’s important to note that Flash had no ulterior motives; his surveillance was solely focused on Venom, who isn’t too fond of MJ listening in on their chat.

Initially appearing as Peter Parker’s school tormentor, Flash Thompson has undergone a significant transformation since his initial appearance in the ’60s. Leaving behind his high school days, Flash joined the U.S. Military and served overseas during crucial Middle Eastern operations. Despite facing near-death experiences and losing multiple limbs, he was given another opportunity to participate in action as Agent Venom. Since then, he has not only adopted this role but also existed independently as a symbiote being at times. Despite these transformations, Flash has consistently adhered to his moral compass, choosing what he believed was right in every situation.

Similar to Flash’s introduction as an ordinary yet extraordinary love interest for Barry Allen, Mary Jane Watson first appeared in a similar role for Peter Parker. However, it wasn’t until after the demise of Gwen Stacy that their relationship became significant. In terms of romantic matters, she is unquestionably the most crucial person in his life. Regrettably, a character from another dimension named Paul, who was the son of the Emissary and caused catastrophic disruption by summoning his dark deity, brought them trouble. Despite eventually escaping this apocalyptic reality and returning safely to the main Marvel Universe, MJ and Paul were already deeply connected and had even produced two ethereal children before returning. Consequently, their relationship with Peter became irreparable.

After the conclusion of Marvel Comics’ “Venom War” crossover, Mary Jane and the Venom symbiote formed a connection with each other. In the ensuing months, the identity of the All-New Venom’s new host was shrouded in mystery, with an eclectic group of characters, such as Rick Jones and Luke Cage, being potential candidates for this role.

Initially, as the potential suspects were eliminated, it became increasingly evident that an unrecognized fifth individual seemed to be the prime suspect. However, this revelation didn’t guide readers towards Michael Jackson being the suspect, much to the disappointment of many fans, who had been eagerly following the case. This unexpected twist took away the suspense for them.

All-New Venom #7 goes on sale June 4 from Marvel Comics.
