All Humble Games Employees Have Been Fired. „The Game Industry Is Volatile, It's Been Inundated by People Who Only Want Exponential Growth at the Expense of Making Great Games With Great Teams”

Update (July 24)

As a long-time gamer and follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel disheartened by the recent news that Humble Games, the publishing division of Humble Bundle, has been closed down. This comes as yet another blow to the gaming community after the closure of other studios like Tango Gameworks, Volition, and Pieces Interactive.

Following the article on Humble Games published at Aftermath.site, new insights emerged regarding the challenges faced by the company. CEO Steve Horowitz from Ziff Davis, which owns Humble Games, highlighted significant delays and escalating costs as the primary issues preventing a sale. Despite two attempted sales, no genuine purchase offers were materialized. Consequently, staff reductions ensued, and the remaining tasks will be handled by external studio The Powell Group.

Displeased ex-employees of Humble Games strongly dispute Ziff Davis’ description of the current situation as a “restructuring,” viewing it instead as an attempt to downplay the severity of the situation. Additionally, there have been accusations that the company owner is being untruthful about the matter.

Anonymous Humble Games employee contradicts Ziff’s claim, stating it as a disguise for damage control rather than an honest restructuring.

The responsibility for running the operations has been transferred to an outside consulting firm, with no employees remaining from Humble Games. This statement, crafted by Ziff Davis, Humble Games’ parent company, should be taken with a grain of salt according to Chris Radley, a former Humble Games employee.

From my perspective as a gamer, it seemed that Ziff and Humble Games had different approaches to making money. Ziff excelled at managing media assets and generating substantial advertising income. However, Humble Games’ publishing model didn’t align with their business strategy. They required financial resources immediately, so they couldn’t afford the luxury of exploring a new partnership like Humble Games.

An unnamed source from Humble Games expressed disappointment about Ziff Davis’ lack of comprehension regarding the complexities and timeframes involved in game development. When they began to grasp the intricacies, their dissatisfaction grew as the company’s stock declined. Ultimately, they decided it was best for Ziff Davis to exit the gaming industry.

Update (July 23)

As a gamer, I’ve got some news to share about Humble Games. Contrary to any rumors you might have heard, Humble Bundle isn’t going out of business! But we are making some changes. Humble Games is in the midst of a restructuring process, and we’ll keep you updated on what that means for our community as we move forward.

Original news (July 23)

Recently, the gaming industry hasn’t been thriving. Sadly, many workers in this field have lost their jobs. Companies like Tango Gameworks, Volition, and Pieces Interactive had to shut down. Today, even Humble Games’ entire team became part of this unfortunate trend.

Approximately 36 employees at Humble Games received notice today that their workplace was shutting down, leading to layoffs. On social media, some team members expressed their farewell messages.

Emilee Kieffer, a seasoned quality control expert at the firm, spoke candidly about the leadership in big corporations when discussing the current predicament.

As a seasoned game developer with over a decade of experience in the industry, I’ve seen my fair share of ups and downs. But today marks a particularly disappointing milestone: another year, another layoff. My team and I are packing our things and saying goodbye to Humble Games.

Humble Games is a sector of Humble Bundle that handles the publishing of indie games in-house. Notable titles like Ring of Pain, Forager, Unpacking, Signalis, Coral Island, Midnight Fight Express, and most recently Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, have been released under its jurisdiction. The future implications of Humble Bundle shutting down Humble Games remain uncertain, encompassing the Choice subscription as well. The parent company of Humble Games, Ziff Davis, has yet to address this issue publicly.
