All ‘Harry Potter’ Movies to Get Theatrical Re-Releases in China (EXCLUSIVE)

As a child growing up in China during the late 90s and early 2000s, I was captivated by the magical world of Harry Potter. The first time I saw Hogwarts on the silver screen, it felt like a dream come true. The enchanting universe J.K. Rowling created transported me to a place where magic was real and anything seemed possible.

Enthusiasts of Hogwarts, particularly those residing on the Chinese mainland, can anticipate a broad re-run of the entire “Harry Potter” series, commencing from mid-October.

Warner Bros. Pictures, responsible for the franchise, announced that the movies will be screened in approximately 3,400 theaters spread across 295 cities in China. The series commences on October 11 with “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” followed by the remaining seven titles being released weekly until late October and November.

Besides the standard 2D versions, they’ll also offer a variety of enhanced formats at a higher price, such as CINITY, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema.

The studio announced that this new release is a major achievement for the ‘Harry Potter’ movie franchise, since it’s the first time all eight movies can be found together and streamed continuously in any location on such a grand scale.

Films produced in Hollywood have faced difficulties in China during the pandemic period, due to an increase in the quality and budget of domestic Chinese movies, and a focus on stories that resonate more with Chinese audiences. In 2021, the market share for foreign-language films dropped to approximately 15% in China.

The “Harry Potter” series occupies a prestigious and distinctive position in the chronicles of the Chinese film industry growth, being recognized as one of the most cherished and groundbreaking Western films to be screened in Chinese cinemas. These productions spanned from 2001 to 2011, an era when multiplexes were just emerging in China, and the nation’s film production, distribution, and exhibition sectors were all undergoing swift transformations. For many Chinese viewers, these were their initial encounters with Western fantasy-drama films in comfortable, contemporary cinema environments.

Kurt Rieder, who leads theatrical distribution for APAC at Warner Bros. Discovery, pointed out that a significant number of Chinese viewers haven’t experienced ‘Harry Potter’ movies on the big screen,” stated during the APOS media and entertainment conference in Indonesia on Thursday.

Hollywood movies are set to be among the initial titles debuting in Chinese theaters post the National Day holidays, commencing on October 1st and lasting for a week, starting from next Tuesday. This period is known for being a high season for movie-going and is typically ruled by popular Chinese films across multiple genres.
