This week, Microsoft made substantial reductions by dismissing multiple Xbox developers, halting game productions, and shuttering at least one studio as part of their recent major cost-cutting measures. However, there are more than 40 ongoing projects that they’re continuing to work on, and it has been revealed that all the games showcased during the Xbox Games Showcase in June are still under development.
According to Windows Central’s report, everything featured in the showcase was confirmed to be safe, with titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, The Outer Worlds 2, Grounded 2, Keeper, Gears of War: Reloaded, and Clockwork Revolution being part of the lineup. Additionally, games not showcased at the event, like State of Decay 3, are also moving forward as planned, the report stated. Meanwhile, a separate source told Variety that every game displayed in June’s event is set to continue development.
Regarding games not moving forward, Rare’s Everwild and the upcoming Perfect Dark have been scrapped – neither game was showcased, leading to speculation about their potential reasons for cancellation. Microsoft’s Matt Booty hinted in a staff memo that some unannounced projects were axed as well, which could include the rumored MMO Blackbird from ZeniMax Online Studios.
The cancellations of games, layoffs, and shutting down The Initiative studio, as stated by Booty, signify a larger initiative to realign objectives and allocate resources for better outcomes in an evolving industry. These decisions weren’t made carelessly because every project and team embodies years of hard work, creativity, and dedication.
Moving ahead, I, as a dedicated gamer, can affirm that Xbox’s approach to its gaming portfolio remains consistent – it’s all about crafting exceptional games brimming with fresh narratives, captivating worlds, and unforgettable characters. Microsoft is currently developing over 40 games, and they’ve hinted at a robust lineup for the year 2026. This exciting roster will feature the new Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, the next installment in the Forza series, and potentially a new Halo title as well.
Microsoft reduced its Xbox division as part of a larger cost-reduction plan, resulting in approximately 9,000 employees worldwide being let go, representing roughly 4% of the company’s total workforce.
