After nearly twenty years, the famous sci-fi crossover event featuring both Predator and Alien could be happening again. The two franchises collided in 2004, pitting the deadly Yautja from the Predator films against the terrifying xenomorphs from the Alien series – a natural rivalry. While the 2007 sequel, AvP: Requiem, wasn’t as popular, fans have been hoping for a rematch ever since, and it now seems possible.
It’s been almost two decades since the last Alien vs. Predator film, but both the Alien and Predator series are experiencing a resurgence with recent, more grounded installments. Now, early signs suggest that audiences might be open to another Alien vs. Predator movie – either as a sequel or a fresh reboot of the first two films.
The Alien vs. Predator Movies Are Streaming Hits
It’s been twenty-two years since Alien vs. Predator first brought the Yautja and xenomorphs together on the big screen, thrilling sci-fi fans. Now, the movie is gaining popularity on streaming services. It was recently added to HBO Max and quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched films, landing at No. 9 (according to FlixPatrol).
The new Alien vs. Predator movie is quickly gaining popularity, mirroring the success of the first film. It recently launched on HBO Max and has already become one of the platform’s top 10 most-watched films in the US. This means both Alien vs. Predator movies are now streaming hits, almost two decades after the latest one was released in cinemas.
Even though the original Alien vs. Predator films didn’t impress critics (scoring only 22% and 12% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences are still very interested in the series. With a twenty-year-old franchise still drawing crowds, it’s clear there’s a strong desire for these kinds of movies, and it suggests there’s potential for more Alien vs. Predator installments to be made soon.
The Stage Is Set for Alien vs. Predator 3
Fans have been asking for it, and a third Alien vs. Predator movie might actually happen. Both the Alien and Predator series have seen a recent comeback, with new movies that feel like the originals. With both franchises doing well, a new crossover could be on the way.
Following a disappointing reboot in 2018’s The Predator, Dan Trachtenberg successfully revitalized the series with his 2022 Hulu film, Prey, starring Amber Midthunder. The film’s success led 20th Century Fox to fully support Trachtenberg’s vision for the future of the franchise. He has since directed two more well-received installments: Predator: Killer of Killers and Predator: Badlands.
Predator: Badlands was the first Predator film to be released in cinemas since the 2018 reboot. Despite some concerns that the franchise’s popularity on streaming wouldn’t lead to strong ticket sales, those worries proved unfounded when the film came out. Badlands quickly became the highest-grossing film in the Predator series, proving that there’s still a strong audience for the franchise nearly forty years after the original movie premiered in 1987.
The Alien franchise is popular again. After some divisive movies like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, the series shifted gears with a simpler, more focused film, similar to what the Predator series did. This helped regain fans’ confidence. Following the strong reception of Romulus, more Alien movies are now planned, including a sequel.
The popular Alien franchise recently expanded to television with the new FX series, Alien: Earth. The show’s first season was very well-received, further boosting the franchise’s popularity, and more adventures with the terrifying xenomorphs are officially planned.
Now that both the Alien and Predator films have been more successful recently, another Alien vs. Predator movie seems likely. It’s clear the two series are heading towards a crossover, and the people making the films appear to be giving fans what they want.
Is Alien vs. Predator 3 Finally Happening?
It looks like we might be getting another Alien vs. Predator movie soon. Recent developments in the Predator films strongly suggest a third crossover is in the works. For example, the last movie showed a frozen alien creature on a Predator spaceship in a scene after the credits. It also included an alien skull as part of a Predator’s trophy collection and featured the Weyland-Yutani corporation, which is well-known from the Alien series.
It’s a little strange that currently, only the Predator franchise is suggesting a potential crossover event, while Alien isn’t saying anything. However, this approach mirrors what happened with the previous Alien vs. Predator films. Those first two movies are officially part of the Predator story. While the Predators (Yautja) aren’t considered part of the Alien universe, the xenomorphs are established within the Predator universe. These kinds of timeline and canon questions always get complicated with crossovers between different franchises, but it does explain why only Predator seems to be teasing something big in the future.
Several important people involved in creating and directing the Alien vs. Predator movies have said they’d like to make more. In 2024, a studio head at 20th Century Fox mentioned a desire to revisit the series, and even suggested they’d be open to a new direction that would differentiate it from the earlier installments.
The director of Alien: Romulus has expressed interest in a crossover with the Predator franchise, even suggesting a collaboration with Dan Trachtenberg, a key figure behind the Predator films. Trachtenberg himself has indicated he’d be open to working on such a crossover event.
As a huge fan, I’m so excited to hear that a third Alien vs. Predator movie is almost definitely happening! Both previous films are still really popular on streaming, and with both the Alien and Predator franchises doing so well even after all this time, it just makes sense for Disney and 20th Century Fox to make it. Honestly, it feels like a no-brainer – it could be huge! It’s not a matter of if we’ll get another one, but when it will finally come out. I can’t wait!
Alien vs. Predator and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem are both available to stream on HBO Max.
The Alien and Predator franchises are both available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.
