Alien: Romulus Includes An Easter Egg For This Popular Video Game

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for survival-horror games and a deep love for the Alien franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement for Alien: Romulus! Having spent countless hours cowering behind walls in Alien: Isolation, the game that taught me just how terrifying the Xenomorph can be when done right, I’m thrilled to see Director Fede Alvarez honoring this masterpiece with an Easter egg.

In the upcoming movie, Alien: Romulus, there will be a subtle tribute to the 2014 survival-horror video game, Alien: Isolation. Director Fede Alvarez has mentioned that he learned quite a bit about creating horror from the Creative Assembly game, and in appreciation for its impact, he’s incorporating an Easter egg inspired by it into Alien: Romulus.

In an interview on Inside Total Film podcast, he explained that in this movie, a phone is always shown just before something dangerous occurs. Similarly, in the game, if there was a phone, you knew trouble was coming next. It’s the same pattern here – phones are deliberately placed at crucial points throughout the film. Spotting a phone means it’s time to prepare for an unexpected turn of events.

In his continued remarks, Alvarez expressed that the game Alien: Isolation effectively demonstrated how the Alien franchise can still be genuinely frightening when executed skillfully in today’s era.

He expressed, “If only I had the ability, I’d adore recreating the Alien experience, sending shivers down the audience’s spines once more with that chilling creature and its haunting environments.” He was engaged in play, reflecting on how truly frightening Alien could be when revisited with that tone.

On August 16, Alien: Romulus premieres, promising to return the series to its original essence. In this story, a group of space explorers are rummaging through an abandoned spacecraft when they stumble upon the ominous Xenomorph. The film features Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu in leading roles.

Ridley Scott, who directed the original Alien, is a producer on Alien: Romulus.
