As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must admit that the current box office scene in the U.K. is nothing short of thrilling. The latest addition to the Alien franchise, Romulus, continues to reign supreme, demonstrating the enduring appeal of science fiction horror. The Bank Holiday weekend saw some fierce competition, yet Romulus stood its ground, showcasing an impressive cumulative total of £8.2 million.
In its second week of screening, Disney’s movie “Alien: Romulus” continued to dominate the U.K. and Irish box office, accumulating approximately £2 million ($2.6 million) in earnings, according to figures by Comscore, raising its overall total to £8.2 million ($10.8 million).
Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the science fiction horror movie stood out among tough competitors, both from holdovers (previously released films) and new releases. Sony’s “It Ends With Us” stayed in second position, earning approximately £1.8 million in its third week, boosting its total to around £15.8 million. Meanwhile, Walt Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” maintained its appeal in its fifth week, securing the No. 3 spot with £1.7 million and increasing its overall earnings to over £52 million.
In its seventh week, Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” maintained its position at the fourth spot, earning an additional £1.4 million, bringing its total earnings to £41.9 million. Meanwhile, Curzon’s new release, “Kneecap”, entered the scene strongly at the fifth position, raking in more than £1 million. Warner Bros.’ latest offering, “Blink Twice”, opened at the sixth spot with a debut of £746,328.
In the past 11 weeks, Disney’s “Inside Out 2” continued to impress, earning a total of approximately £56.9 million, including £604,523 last week. “The Crow”, distributed by Entertainment Film Distributors, made its debut at number 8, bringing in £410,308. “Coraline”, reissued for its 15th anniversary by Trafalgar Releasing, secured the ninth spot with £398,628, adding to its existing total of £2.2 million. Warner Bros.’ “Twisters” ended up in the top 10 for the sixth consecutive week, earning an additional £280,756 and bringing its total to approximately £13.5 million.
On August 30th, I’m thrilled about the array of fresh premieres and anniversary re-releases! Among the newbies, Entertainment Film Distributors is unveiling the latest rendition of “The Count of Monte Cristo,” featuring Pierre Niney. Meanwhile, Metis Films presents the Toronto-debuted Saudi thriller “Mandoob (Night Courier)” from director Ali Kalthami.
1. “The Black Bear production is debuting SXSW winner ‘Sing Sing,’ starring Colman Domingo, and Miracle Communications is launching the horror film ‘Broken Bird.’ Meanwhile, Sony’s offering in the horror genre is ‘AfrAId,’ and from Universal comes ‘Touch,’ directed by the seasoned Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur.”
Some other notable releases are “Black Dog,” a Chinese film directed by Guan Hu and produced by Trinity CineAsia, which recently won the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes; “Paradise is Burning,” a Swedish drama that triumphed at the BFI London Film Festival, courtesy of Conic; and “Close to You,” a movie starring Elliot Page that was screened at Toronto by Vertigo.
From India, Yash Raj Films is releasing Malayalam-language found footage thriller “Footage.”
This weekend’s movie schedule features special engagements and anniversary screenings such as:
