‘Alien: Romulus’ Ends ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ Three-Week Box Office Reign With $41.5 Million Debut

As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of exhilaration upon hearing about the success of “Alien: Romulus.” Having followed this series since its inception, it’s fascinating to see how it continues to captivate audiences despite the passage of time. The fact that it managed to outshine even the mighty Deadpool and Wolverine is a testament to its enduring appeal.

The latest installment in the “Alien” series, titled “Alien: Romulus,” made a strong debut at the domestic box office, earning $41.5 million. This impressive opening secured the second-highest start for the long-running franchise. With these sales, it successfully dethroned “Deadpool & Wolverine” from its three-week reign, pushing it to surpass “Joker” as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, with earnings of $1.14 billion.

These successes are rounding off Disney’s impressive summer run, which started with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (the top-grossing movie in May with $397 million), followed by “Inside Out 2” (June’s highest earner with a whopping $1.597 billion) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (July’s box office champion with earnings of $1.14 billion). The studio recently broke the record for being the first to reach $3 billion in global ticket sales this year, and they are expected to further boost this figure with the releases of “Moana 2” on November 27 and “Mufasa: The Lion King” on December 20. This is a promising comeback after Disney experienced several commercial flops in 2023, including “The Marvels,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the remake of “The Haunted Mansion,” and the animated film “Wish.”

As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t help but share some exciting news about “Alien: Romulus”. This cinematic masterpiece has made quite an impact, raking in $66.7 million at international box offices, contributing to a global start of a whopping $108.2 million! The critical response has been overwhelmingly positive, with a 82% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience reception has also been favorable, giving the film a solid “B+” grade on CinemaScore. These numbers certainly indicate a promising run for this movie in theaters!

“David A. Gross, head of Franchise Entertainment Research, praises this movie as a superb start for a series that’s deep into its run, stating, ‘This opening film raises the bar for creature features, much like it did in 1979. Forty-five years on, the story continues to captivate us. This is top-tier and impressive work.'”

As a passionate moviegoer, I can’t help but share my excitement about the latest addition to the chilling “Alien” franchise – “Alien: Romulus.” Directed by Fede Alvarez, who gave us the nail-biting thriller “Don’t Breathe,” this seventh installment is a terrifying journey through the stars.

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who has seen countless films in various genres and periods, I must admit that the current state of cinema distribution leaves me somewhat disheartened. The recent withdrawal of “Alien: Romulus” from its nationwide release, following the disappointing performance of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2,” highlights a trend that I’ve observed over the past few years – the increasing financial risks associated with producing and releasing a movie.

Despite the close competition, “Deadpool & Wolverine” managed to overtake Sony’s romantic drama “It Ends With Us,” finishing second in the race. The Marvel superhero adventure, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, collected an impressive $29 million in its fourth week, which represented a 46% drop compared to the previous weekend. To date, it has earned a staggering $545.8 million within North America and $596.8 million overseas.

In its second week, “It Ends With Us” continued to impress at the box office, earning $24 million across 3,739 cinemas. This was a 52% drop from its record-breaking opening weekend of $50 million. The film, based on a novel and starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (who also directed), is approaching the $100 million mark in domestic box office receipts, having made $97.7 million thus far.

In its fifth weekend in cinemas, Universal’s disaster movie “Twisters” took fourth place with a gross of $9.8 million from 3,483 locations, only decreasing by 35% compared to the previous week. Interestingly, despite being available for rental on premium video-on-demand this weekend, it seems that this didn’t significantly impact ticket sales. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers in central Oklahoma, “Twisters” has amassed a remarkable $238.4 million in North America and $333.4 million globally.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, I was thrilled to be a part of the successful re-release of the enchanting stop-motion animation film, “Coraline.” This beloved production from Laika claimed a spot among the top five films, raking in $8.9 million at 1,535 venues. Since it graced our screens once more on Thursday, it has garnered approximately $11.3 million in ticket sales.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s movie adaptation of “Borderlands” saw a continued slump at the box office. This poorly-received film, featuring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Ariana Greenblatt, dropped to ninth position in its second week, earning $2.35 million from 3,125 cinemas. To date, “Borderlands” has managed a dismal $13 million within North America. The film’s production cost was $115 million (some of which was offset by international sales, as stated by the studio), making it one of the biggest flops in cinema this year.
