Alien: Romulus Director Reveals The Movie's Surprising Connection To The Last Of Us

As a die-hard fan of both Alien and The Last of Us, I find it absolutely mind-blowing to witness the intertwining of these two universes. Fede Alvarez’s revelation that he drew inspiration from The Last of Us while writing Alien: Romulus is nothing short of fascinating. The fact that Isabela Merced, who played Kay in Romulus, was later cast as Dina in The Last of Us series just adds another layer to this intriguing connection.

In an exciting reveal, Director Fede Alvarez (of Alien: Romulus) has disclosed that there’s an unexpected link between the sci-fi movie and The Last of Us. (Note: This information may contain spoilers for both Alien: Romulus and The Last of Us.)

Through a post on social media, Alvarez shared that he was simultaneously working on “The Last of Us: Part II” and his own project, “Romulus,” during which the character Dina’s pregnancy inspired him to have Kay also become pregnant in his film.

Following that decision, Alvarez chose Isabela Merced for the role of Kay, and exactly a year after, she was also cast as Dina in HBO’s The Last of Us. This is a true account,” Alvarez stated.

Fun Tidbit: As I crafted #AlienRomulus, I found myself engrossed in #TheLastOfUs2; Dina’s pregnant character sparked an idea for my own character, Kay, to also be pregnant. Later, Isabella Merced was cast as Kay… Coincidentally, a year later, she landed the role of Dina on the HBO series. A true tale!

In addition, some folks speculate that the character Romulus in the series might have been influenced by the character Lev from The Last of Us. Alvarez playfully hinted at this possibility through a humorous GIF.

Just last week, the movie “Romulus” hit theaters and it’s been doing really well! It’s garnered good critical acclaim and has made over $225 million globally so far. Interestingly enough, “Romulus” is currently the third highest-grossing film in the Alien series, with only “Alien: Covenant” ($240 million) and “Prometheus” ($403 million) earning more at the box office.

In the production of Alien: Romulus, the filmmakers employed artificial intelligence significantly, a decision that has been defended by Alvarez amidst growing debate and criticism within Hollywood and beyond about the proper use of AI in creative endeavors.

Regarding “The Last of Us”, its HBO series is set to come back in 2025. In this new season, Merced will portray the character Dina, while Kaitlyn Dever has been brought on board to play Abby. It’s worth noting that there have been reports about increased security measures for Dever.
