Alien: Romulus Clip Channels Director Fede Alvarez's Past Work

As a seasoned gamer and survivor of countless alien invasions in video games, I can confidently say that Alien: Romulus seems to be taking its inspiration from the most terrifying encounters I’ve ever had in the virtual world – or perhaps even worse! The Xenomorph’s uncanny ability to detect every sound, reminiscent of the stealth mechanics in many modern games, is a chilling reminder that no one can truly hide when the alien is on the hunt.

The tagline for the 1979 Alien movie is known for saying “in space, no one can hear you scream.” However, this phrase doesn’t convey that Xenomorphs seem to have exceptional hearing and are capable of detecting almost any sound in a spaceship or colony. This sensitivity to noise is clearly demonstrated in a recently released sneak peek for the upcoming Alien film, Alien: Romulus.

The video showcases Isabela Merced portraying Kay, a member of a doomed youth group who believed salvaging materials from abandoned ships was a wise decision. In this particular segment, Kay is disarmed and stealthily moving past a Xenomorph. This alien appears to be on high alert, searching for Kay while focusing intensely as she makes every effort to move silently. It’s similar to Jane Levy’s character evading the blind antagonist, Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang), from the movie Don’t Breathe.

Regardless of Kay’s best efforts, she’s still caught off guard when a Xenomorph appears close by and drags away two bodies. It’s difficult to tell if the bodies came from Kay’s crew or if they were originally stationed on the ship that’s now overrun by facehuggers and Xenomorphs.

In addition to Cailee Spaeny, the movie features Rain Carradine portrayed by her, David Jonsson as Andy, Archie Renaux as Tyler, Spike Fearn as Bjorn, and Aileen Wu as Navarro. Known for directing Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead, Fede Álvarez directed Alien: Romulus, which he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The movie is set to premiere in theaters on August 16.
