‘Alien: Romulus’ Bursts Onto U.K., Ireland Box Office Charts, Dethrones ‘It Ends With Us’

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with over three decades of attending screenings under my belt, I must say that the current state of the UK box office is nothing short of exhilarating! Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” has certainly made its mark with an impressive opening weekend, and it’s always a pleasure to witness the birth of a new sci-fi horror franchise.

In its debut weekend, Disney’s movie “Alien: Romulus” became the highest-grossing film in both the United Kingdom and Ireland, generating approximately £3.7 million (around $4.8 million) as reported by data from Comscore.

The sci-fi horror film unseated Sony’s “It Ends With Us,” which moved down to second place with £2.8 million in its sophomore frame, bringing its total to £11.3 million. Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” held strong in third place, adding £2.3 million in its fourth week for a cumulative gross of £48.4 million.

Trafalgar Releasing celebrated their 15th anniversary by re-releasing the film “Coraline,” which debuted at the fourth spot with a box office earnings of £1.2 million. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” maintained its strong performance in its sixth week, earning another £1.1 million, bringing its total revenue to an impressive £38.7 million.

Among the top ten films this past weekend, I found myself captivated by several titles. Warner Bros.’ “Trap” landed at number six with a weekend gross of £558,233 and a total of £2.5 million. Disney’s “Inside Out 2” held steady at number seven, earning £506,524 this weekend and boasting a whopping £55.5 million in total earnings so far. Warner Bros.’ “Twisters” followed closely at number eight with a weekend take of £315,162 and £12.9 million amassed overall. Bakrania Media’s Bollywood horror-comedy “Stree 2” made its debut at number nine, bringing in £291,804 during its premiere weekend. Last but not least, Lionsgate U.K.’s “Borderlands” added another £181,065 to its total of £1.4 million in its second weekend.

The upcoming week will feature the wide release of Warner Bros.’ thriller “Blink Twice,” directed by Zoë Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum, in over 300 cinemas. Additionally, Miracle/Dazzler’s animation “Noah’s Ark” will be hitting screens. Lastly, Sony is debuting the comedy film “Between the Temples,” starring Jason Schwartzman, Carol Kane, and Dolly De Leon.

1. Entertainment Film Distributors unveils the contemporary remake of the 1994 cult favorite, “The Crow.” On the other hand, Universal premieres the horror-thriller titled “Cuckoo,” featuring Hunter Schafer, which made its debut at Berlin. ICA Cinema presents the political documentary “Clandestina,” and from Vertigo comes the champagne-themed family drama called “Widow Clicquot.”

For a limited time of one week, enthusiasts of nostalgia can revisit Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” in its 2024 reissue, and Paramount’s “Pulp Fiction” in its 30th Anniversary 4K remastered version.

Indie cinema remains bustling with activity, boasting upcoming releases such as “The Mountain Within Me” by Dogwoof, “Kneecap,” Ireland’s Oscar contender from Curzon, and “Cadejo Blanco” distributed by Bulldog Film Distribution.

On August 22, which marks megastar Chiranjeevi’s birthday, Dreamz Entertainment from India will re-release the hit movie “Indra” that was made in 2002. Additionally, they are also releasing a Telugu comedy titled “Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam.”
