The character Prometheus hinted at a prequel for the Alien series, but it’s uncertain if this will ever be fully realized. However, the future of the Alien films seems more optimistic. Typically, the Alien movies that followed Prometheus and its sequel Alien: Covenant are not highly ranked within the franchise. Still, these films have developed a dedicated fanbase who eagerly anticipate a third prequel to connect the prequels with the original 1979 Alien movie.
Despite the fact that both “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” didn’t perform well financially, leading to a shift in direction for the series, the box office success of “Alien: Romulus,” released in 2024, confirmed this change. “Alien: Romulus” is set between the first and second Alien movies, connecting the storylines from Ridley Scott’s prequels to the original timeline instead of a third film. With a new path established for the Alien franchise, it appears that the tale hinted at by “Prometheus” may never be completely resolved, but this could mean something even more intriguing is in store.
The Alien Franchise Is In A Much Better Place Now Than During Prometheus & Covenant
The Future Looks Incredibly Exciting
Looking back, I must admit that the Alien franchise wasn’t exactly thriving during the 2010s. Movies like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant certainly had their dedicated fanbase, but they didn’t resonate with a broader audience, as indicated by their underwhelming box office performances. Add to that the uncertainty surrounding where the franchise was heading and what Ridley Scott had in store, it felt like the Alien series was stuck in a holding pattern, with new installments emerging only when Scott saw fit.
It appears that the Alien series is poised for further expansion. A follow-up to “Alien: Romulus” is currently being developed, with director Fede Álvarez aiming to start filming in 2025. Additionally, a TV show titled “Alien: Earth,” set for release in 2025, serves as another prequel to the original 1979 Alien movie. Both of these projects promise to advance the Alien franchise in an exhilarating manner. Moreover, there are two more hints suggesting a potential return of a major crossover, the first being a teaser in the trailer for “Predator: Badlands,” due out in 2025.
In the trailer, Elle Fanning’s character appears to roll her eyes into her head similarly to David Jonsson’s Andy in “Alien: Romulus”. Additionally, a subtle glimpse of the Alien’s Weyland-Yutani Corporation logo suggests that another Predator crossover event might be taking place. This theory is further supported by statements made by the head of 20th Century Studios in 2024, hinting at an even more thrilling future for the Alien franchise, with exciting developments beyond traditional narratives.
I Wish We Saw The Conclusion Of David’s Story, But Alien’s Future Is More Exciting
Alien Has Never Been In Better Shape
To put it simply, I’ve always been drawn to the stories of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. They have a knack for taking familiar franchises and adding layers of complexity to age-old mysteries that fans have pondered for years. For instance, the storyline of David in these movies was particularly intriguing, and I would’ve loved to see his tale continue in another Alien prequel film. However, I must admit, the future of the Alien series is looking incredibly promising as well.
Essentially, I’ve hinted before that films like “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” were met with controversy and underperformed at the box office. If the first “Alien” movie following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox bombed, it could have spelled the end for the franchise altogether. However, “Alien: Romulus” managed to keep the series alive by returning to its roots in a manner that pleased fans and laid groundwork for future tales. Adding to this excitement is the hint of another “Predator” collaboration, making the “Alien’s” future more intriguing than ever, regardless of whether the story of “Prometheus” comes to pass or not.
