Adarsh Gourav is embarking on new, unexplored grounds with “Alien: Earth,” the forthcoming FX series which represents his initial significant step into science fiction.
The upcoming movie titled ‘Alien: Earth’ is a precursor to Ridley Scott’s 1979 film ‘Alien’. This film marks the beginning of the nine-film series, with the latest installment being ‘Alien: Romulus’, set for release in 2025. The storyline expands upon the foundational franchise that has been instrumental to its success.
Gourav shares with EbMaster that he’s playing a main role in an upcoming series. It takes place in the future, and he’s thrilled about it because it allows him to be part of a blend between science fiction, horror, and psychological thriller genres, which are his favorite acting challenges.
He admits his understanding of science fiction is quite shallow, yet he prefers psychological thrillers and horror movies as his favorite genres when it comes to watching films.
Initially, Gourav garnered global attention due to his outstanding performance in Ramin Bahrani’s Netflix movie “The White Tiger,” a role that secured him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in 2021. Subsequently, he showcased his acting skills in “Extrapolations” on Apple TV+, the Netflix series “Guns & Gulaabs,” and the Netflix film “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan.
Apart from his role, Gourav is featured in “Superboys of Malegaon,” a movie that was recently showcased at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival. In this film, he plays Nasir Shaikh, a character based on the actual filmmaker who gained popularity by making low-cost parodies of Bollywood blockbusters in the tiny Indian town of Malegaon.
To get ready for the part, Gourav delved deeply into Shaikh’s world. He says, “I didn’t have a strategy. I simply wanted to go to Malegaon and be near Nasir.” This unexpectedly led to a collaboration, where Gourav produced a short film titled “Nana Ki Kranti,” which was directed by Shaikh, during his study phase.
Director Reema Kagti of “Superboys of Malegaon” commends Gourav’s transformative acting style, referring to it as chameleonic. According to Gourav, this ability stems from his method: “I made a conscious decision early on that when someone watches me on screen, they shouldn’t see me. Instead, they should see the character I am portraying.
Gourav is venturing into various artistic realms. “I’ve been working on composing more music for my personal projects,” he shares, mentioning that his initial background was in Hindustani classical singing. He goes on to say that he’s also attempting to craft stories with the aim of turning them into screenplays.
