Sigourney Weaver has often been associated with the Alien series throughout its long run, but an unrecognized star was KY jelly in the initial film. This slippery practice seems to be a tradition that Alien: Earth is maintaining by still employing it in a comparable manner.
While touring the Alien: Earth production set, Weta Workshop’s Tim Domett, in charge of creature-related episodes, disclosed that the 1979 film served as inspiration for employing lubricant designed for intimate purposes in certain practical special effects during the TV series.
As a dedicated fan, I drew inspiration from the iconic Alien when envisioning our creation’s appearance and the objectives we aimed to accomplish. Just like them, we too use a safe, versatile lubricant, such as KY jelly, for various aspects of our project. This is particularly crucial when it comes to elements that might come into contact with the actors’ faces. Given that our creation towers over the cast and frequently drips on their costumes, it’s essential that we can easily clean off any residue.
Instead of having a specific formula, we simply employ it. We merely adjust its consistency slightly if it needs to be easily spoken or given a slight blue tint in appearance, and so on… Needless to say, handling it has been rather slippery and sticky for us.
The TV show titled “Alien: Earth” starts airing on August 12 on FX. Each week during its initial eight-episode season, a fresh episode will be available on Hulu.
