Fans of a particular era are in for a treat with the upcoming news! The iconic 1995 film “Clueless,” which turns 30 this July, remains one of the finest teen movies ever made (and arguably the best of all time). It still strikes a chord with viewers today. If you’re wondering how fans can celebrate three decades of “Clueless” in 2023, here’s some exciting news: A television series sequel is under development, and one familiar face is expected to reappear!
By the set deadline, a reboot of the TV series “Clueless” is under development at Peacock, and it’s so exciting – just like Cher Horowitz herself! The fantastic news is that Alicia Silverstone has agreed to reprise her iconic role as Cher Horowitz, which she originated in the 1995 film. Not only does the series boast a rich legacy on-screen, but the writing team is no stranger to creating material cherished by countless generations of teen viewers.
The talented Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, renowned for their work on “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl,” will be penning the series for the streaming platform and will also serve as executive producers under their Fake Empire banner. Jordan Weiss, the creator of “Dollface,” is also set to write for the follow-up, while original writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence will take on executive producing duties as well.
Peacock Previously Tried To Adapt ‘Clueless’ as a Television Series
Six years ago, Peacock started working on reviving “Clueless” for television viewers, with a reboot centered around Stacey Dash’s character, Dionne Davenport. The storyline revolved around a murder mystery, as Dionne tried to uncover the death of her friend Cher. This idea seemed to draw inspiration from the darker tone that The CW was using in “Riverdale,” which differed from its original material. However, this project did not proceed on the streaming platform.
CBS Television Studios, the rights holder for the Clueless TV property, were looking for ways to utilize the brand further. Eventually, they found a fresh creative trio consisting of Schwartz, Savage, and Weiss. Bringing Alicia Silverstone back to portray Cher Horowitz once more was instrumental in moving this new show concept forward during development stages. At present, details regarding the plot are scarce, but it’s known that it will be a continuation of the movie storyline.
1995 saw the arrival of “Clueless,” a film penned and helmed by Heckerling, which serves as a contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel “Emma.” The story revolves around Cher (Silverstone), a popular, affluent high school student who is often motivated to do good, but with her own self-interest in mind. However, things take an unexpected turn when she and her best friend Dionne (Dash) become friends with a new schoolmate named Tai Fraser (Brittany Murphy) and decide to give her a makeover. As a chain of events unfolds, Cher finds herself questioning the essence of her life, recognizing that not all issues can be resolved by changing one’s wardrobe or appearance, while simultaneously dealing with a complex relationship with her stepbrother Josh (Paul Rudd).
Upon its debut, the movie titled Clueless quickly became a sensation and enduring classic, earning $88 million worldwide on a budget of just $12 million. The film holds an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising it as “a humorous and intelligent reinterpretation of Emma. Clueless delivers a gentle satire that mockingly targets not only teen films but also the glamorous elite of Beverly Hills.” Since its release, it has amassed a large fanbase and is often ranked among the greatest teen movies ever made.
1996 marked the start of a TV series that was inspired by the movie, with Rachel Blanchard stepping into Alicia Silverstone’s role as Cher. Original cast members from the film, such as Eric McCormack (Dash), Donald Faison (Murray), and Elisa Donovan (Amber) also returned. Initially airing on ABC for its first season, the series was later moved to UPN after ABC decided to end it. In total, the Clueless TV show spanned over three seasons and produced 62 episodes.
