Alexander Skarsgard Jokes There’s a ‘Raunchier’ Cut of Kinky BDSM Romance ‘Pillion’ That Wasn’t Shown in Cannes: ‘What You’ve Seen Is the Family-Friendly Version’

Featuring numerous explicit BDSM encounters between gay characters, intricately planned group sexual scenes, full-frontal male nudity and men wearing rubber suits, “Pillion” is undeniably one of the most sexually explicit films shown at Cannes this year, and it has also been well-received.

However, the festival version of the unusual romance that was showcased in the Un Certain Regard section turned out to be quite trivial compared to the potential, much more impactful scenes that could have been displayed instead.

As reported by debut director Harry Lighton, certain sequences from the movie featuring a shy young protagonist played by Harry Melling who takes on a submissive sexual role towards a towering dominant biker character portrayed by Alexander Skarsgard, were removed to protect the sensitivities of the audience at Cannes.

He clarifies to EbMaster that the reason he edited out certain elements was to prevent the audience from feeling intentionally startled by graphic imagery. For instance, there was a close-up of a man’s genitalia, specifically a hard penis, filmed up close through the lens. After watching the film on a large screen, he felt that removing this scene might have been the appropriate choice.

According to Skarsgard, “It’s clear that a more explicit version of this film exists. The one you’ve watched is the family-friendly variant. However, there’s also an ‘Alexander Skarsgard Edit’ as well.

It’s possible that there will be further adjustments to “Pillion” before its U.S. release, which is currently being handled by A24. Lighton mentioned that certain explicit scenes might need to be toned down for a more acceptable viewing experience.

“Apparently that’s what pushes you over the edge!”

Despite the film’s intense visual content, which may have been toned down during editing, “Pillion” fundamentally revolves around a heartwarming and often humorous romance, hidden beneath layers of BDSM exploration. This is what initially attracted Melling to the project upon reading the script.

He clarifies, “What made it captivating for me was its ability to feel both relatable and unfamiliar, as it delved into a subculture not widely known. The intrigue lay in how these seemingly contrasting elements blended together. Essentially, it was the way traditional romantic comedy themes were flipped that I found mesmerizing.

As a fan, I was thrilled when Alexander Skarsgard got picked for the role in Lighton’s movie. He was specifically chosen because they needed a tall, blond actor (and he jokes that Chris Hemsworth wasn’t free at the time). Interestingly, this role came to him after a string of more somber characters.

He mentions that after playing characters in rather grim films such as ‘The Northman’ and ‘Infinity Pool’, he was eager for a change and was looking forward to starring in a typical romantic comedy.

However, one might wonder how Skarsgard felt about the objectification he experienced on screen, considering that numerous scenes in “Pillion” featured his character stripping down to display his muscular physique, with Melling’s character seemingly entranced.

“Oh yeah,” smiles Skarsgard. “It was delicious!”
