With a career spanning over two decades and eight critically acclaimed films under his belt, it is truly an honor to witness this esteemed artist being recognized for his outstanding contribution to the art of film.

At the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, Alexander Payne, whose latest movie “The Holdovers” earned five Oscar nominations and a win, will be honored with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award. This recognition is given in appreciation of his significant impact on filmmaking as a whole.

Jim Taylor, a long-term collaborator of Payne who won an adapted screenplay Oscar for “Sideways” in 2005, will accompany him at the festival happening from August 16 to 23. At this event, Payne plans to present a special viewing of “Sideways,” a movie that was nominated for five Academy Awards.

Payne will conduct a workshop where film lovers can gain insights from him on various topics related to filmmaking, including production, direction, scriptwriting, and more, as stated by the festival.

Eight of Payne’s motion pictures have garnered a total of 24 Oscar nominations, with nods for Best Picture on four occasions and Director three times. He has been victorious twice in the category of Adapted Screenplay, while “The Holdovers” secured this year’s award for Supporting Actress.

Among the films he made are “Citizen Ruth” from 1996, “Election” released in 1999, “About Schmidt” produced in 2002, “The Descendants” which came out in 2011, “Nebraska” from 2013, and “Downsizing” that hit the screens in 2017.

Festival director Jovan Marjanović stated: “It seems appropriate to bestow Alexander Payne with the Heart of Sarajevo Honorary Award, not just because he has a fondness for Sarajevo, but also due to the fact that his narratives always revolve around individuals with immense compassion. As a director who masterfully combines humor and emotional depth, he’s left an indelible impression on modern cinema.
