Alexander Payne will preside over the main jury of the upcoming Venice Film Festival.
The twice-Oscar-winning actor was previously in Venice for “Downsizing,” a comedic sci-fi film where he played a character who gets shrunk to help Earth, premiering at the festival in 2017 and starring Matt Damon.
Alexander Payne, a filmmaker known for his eight humorous movies, has garnered 24 Oscar nominations, four of which were for the prestigious Best Picture award, three times for direction, and twice for adapted screenplay. His most recent work, “The Holdovers,” claimed the Supporting Actress Oscar in 2024. Among his other creations are “Citizen Ruth” (1996), “Election” (1999), “About Schmidt” (2002), “The Descendants” (2011), and “Nebraska” (2013).
Right now, he’s secretly working on a fresh movie that will be filmed in the countryside of Denmark, and he’s not revealing any specifics about it.
Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Alexander Payne, now 64 years old, pursued his undergraduate studies in history and Spanish literature at Stanford University. Later, he obtained a master’s degree in film directing from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Alberto Barbera, Venice’s artistic director, commended Payne as a member of an exclusive group of filmmakers-cinema enthusiasts. These individuals share a deep love for movies, rooted in their understanding of classic films and eagerness to explore modern cinema without any limitations or barriers.
His combination of these traits, coupled with his background in screenwriting, positions him perfectly for the role of heading the Venice jury. This group is tasked with judging films from various parts of the globe,” he explained.
Barbara expressed her appreciation to Alexander for responding positively to her invitation, a connection that dates back to when he made his graduation film at UCLA,” Barbara explained further.
Or:
“Barbara thanked Alexander for accepting her invite, as this friendship can be traced back to the time of his short film during his UCLA graduation,” said Barbara.
“It’s an enormous honor and joy to serve on the jury at Venice,” commented Payne.
Though I, as a film enthusiast, have reservations when it comes to ranking movies side by side, I hold deep admiration for the Venice Film Festival’s almost century-long tradition of amplifying cinema as a profound art form. My anticipation for this event is at an all-time high!”
Or, in a more conversational tone:
“I may be wary of comparing films, but there’s no denying the grandeur and importance of the Venice Film Festival, which has been championing cinema as art for nearly a century. I can hardly wait!
The 82nd edition of Venice will run Aug. 27-Sept. 6
