Alex Garland has beaten Elden Ring 6 times but still has trouble with one boss

After completing six rounds of Elden Ring, Alex Garland has shared his winning approach as he embarks on a seventh challenging RPG adventure.

Back in May 2025, it was officially announced that the filmmaker known for his work on critically acclaimed movies like 28 Days Later, Ex Machina, and Annihilation, would be directing the Elden Ring adaptation for the cinema.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m eagerly looking forward to the maturity of a project that’s just taking its first steps. Hideo Kojima, hyping up the launch of “28 Years Later” which he penned and produced, shared some insights about FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed 2023 game in an interview with IGN.

Sharing that he’s defeated the Elden Beast on six occasions and witnessed the end credits roll that many times, Garland also discussed which boss continues to pose the greatest challenge for him.

Malenia is the challenging character in this game I’ve played seven times now. I’ve increased my level, gathered plenty of resources, and wield an impressive sword, yet I keep attempting to defeat her, over and over.

As a devoted admirer, I owe my perseverance in FromSoft’s challenging game realms to the initial Dark Souls. It’s not about honing skills; it’s more like persistent monkey-typing on a keyboard. You simply keep at it, and miraculously, one day, victory is yours.

Different strategies

After playing the game seven times, it’s clear that Garland’s strategy is effective, but it might spark debate among players.

As a dedicated follower, I’ve always found that FromSoftware’s role-playing games are deeply rooted in the philosophy of ‘mastery through trial and error.’ Mastering enemy attack patterns and devising strategies with various builds across multiple attempts has been the secret sauce to triumph in Soulslikes.

Achieving success through sheer force might seem like overlooking the essence of things, but if it gets the job done, then it’s effective – and there’s no absolute rulebook for how to play.

As of now, there’s no specified release date for Elden Ring by Garland. However, if you’re eagerly waiting for more Elden Ring content, the multiplayer co-op spinoff titled Nightreign, which came out on May 30, might satisfy your craving in the meantime.
