Over the weekend, I was thrilled to see that my top pick, , effortlessly claimed the No. 1 spot at the box office, raking in an impressive $76 million across 4,330 theaters. On the flip side, it seemed that the release of Rust, the troubled production from the actor and writer we all know, didn’t fare as well. According to reports, Rust, directed and co-written by Joel Souza, managed a modest $25,000 in its limited debut weekend. Given its budget of around $8 million, it’s safe to say that this film has a tough road ahead.
The total sum of $25,000 was generated by merely 115 cinemas following the movie’s release, which took place four years after its lead actress, Halyna Hutchins, and director, Souza, were both injured. Baldwin believed the prop gun held only blanks; however, it was discovered that there was a live bullet in the chamber instead.
The Lawsuit was Ultimately Settled
After the incidents occurred, a lawsuit ensued, but ultimately all charges against Baldwin were dismissed following a settlement with Hutchins’ family. Baldwin paid a settlement to the cinematographer’s family, and Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, was appointed as an executive producer on the film. However, the family urged him to complete the project and invited him back to continue his work on it.
At a ceremony recognizing outstanding accomplishments in film camera work, Hutchins was remembered posthumously. However, Baldwin, another producer of Rust, was absent from the Camerimage event.

Critics’ Take on Rust
The movie’s critical assessments aren’t favorable, with its rating dropping to 42%, as many critics have noted. In their comments on a review aggregator, they swiftly highlighted the grim portrayal of real-life tragedy in the film. Tim Teeman from the Times UK expressed this sentiment in his review, stating that “The movie is made even more somber because guns and their depiction as tools of violence are recurring themes in this western set in the 1880s…
1. Johnny Oleksinski from New York Post described “Rust” as “average and sometimes hard to watch.”
2. Jeffrey M. Anderson of Common Sense Media commented on Rotten Tomatoes, “At first glance, this Western seems decent but forgettable, but it’s almost impossible to separate it from the actual incident that took place during filming.”
After the shooting event at Rust, crew member Jason Miller, who worked as both a lap operator and pipe rigger, suffered a bite from a brown recluse spider while wrapping up the film set. This bite led to severe complications like necrosis and sepsis, necessitating hospitalization for him. He underwent numerous surgeries in an attempt to prevent amputation of his arm.
In addition to Rust, stars such as Patrick Scott McDermott, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Jake Busey, Josh Hopkins, and Devon Werkheiser – all known for their roles in Supernatural – were initially part of the cast. However, due to scheduling issues arising from production delays, the actor who was originally set to play Wood Helm, Josh Hopkins himself, ultimately had to depart the project.
Rust is now playing in select movie theaters.
