Alan Wake Update Will Remove A Classic Bowie Song, But There's A Catch

As a seasoned gamer with decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I hear about the impending change in Alan Wake. The haunting melody of Space Oddity has been an integral part of my gaming memories, serving as the perfect soundtrack to the eerie and enigmatic world that Remedy crafted.

In a recent announcement, developers at Remedy revealed that an upcoming change for the game Alan Wake will take away David Bowie’s Space Oddity and insert Strange Moons, originally composed by Petri Alanko, instead. It appears this alteration won’t impact the 2021 release of Alan Wake Remastered though.

“Space Rock classic ‘Ground Control to Major Tom,’ famously sung by Bowie, was used during the end credits of Alan Wake. Although we haven’t heard what Strange Moons will sound like, composer Alanko hinted on Twitter that a portion of the song was initially incorporated into an Alan Wake level that didn’t make it to the game before its release.

Game creators frequently need to revise or remove their games from distribution years after launch due to expiring contractual agreements involving music licenses – as seen with Spec Ops: The Line being taken down from Steam due to multiple partnership licenses for the game lapsing, although it’s uncertain if these pertain to musical rights. The loss of one of the 2010s most praised shooters is regrettable, as it means newer generations can no longer experience it. Notably, the latest DLC for Alan Wake 2, Night Springs, came out in June.

Recently, Remedy has entered into an agreement with Annapurna for joint funding and independent distribution of Control 2. This collaboration could potentially lead to the creation of movies or television series inspired by both the Control and Alan Wake game series.
