In the much-anticipated DC Universe Superman film, there have been numerous speculations about Alan Tudyk’s character. However, the mystery is finally solved! Fresh footage unveiled at CinemaCon 2025 and a direct statement from director James Gunn confirm his role.
Over the years, the character known as Superman has had a rich and notable presence on the big screen. This journey began with George Reeves’ portrayal in 1951’s “Superman and the Mole Men,” and more recently, Henry Cavill stepped into the role within the Snyderverse (for now).
Soon, it will be time for a fresh start not only for Superman but also for the entire DC cinematic universe. In 2022, following James Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge at DC Studios, they declared their intention to produce a solo Superman film which would act as the gateway to the redesigned DC Universe.
As the release draws nearer, Gunn recently graced CinemaCon with his presence and offered a glimpse into the upcoming movie. Some observant viewers might have picked up on a familiar voice in the preview.
Alan Tudyk role confirmed in new Superman footage
Back in September, I was thrilled to discover that Alan Tudyk had been secretly cast for a role in Superman! The buzz around the internet ranged from him possibly playing Brainiac to a live-action portrayal of one of his Creature Commandos characters. But if you really tune in closely, you’ll recognize his distinctive voice as none other than Robot 4!
In the preview clip, Tudyk’s character appears following David Corenswet’s Clark Kent being rescued by his canine companion, Krypto, and a group of Kryptonian robots proceed to attend to the injured superhero.
He thanks them, and Robot 4 responds, “There’s no need for your gratitude, sir. We don’t feel appreciation, being merely machines designed to assist.
In light of his past roles, it’s quite logical that Tudyk could be cast. Given his experience, he’s already shown proficiency in portraying machines, as evidenced by his voice work as Sonny in I, Robot and K-2SO in Star Wars: Rogue One.
Later, there’s a quick, nearly unnoticeable scene where Superman appears bent over a robot, showing clear signs of emotion – the very same robot we glimpsed in the preview.
This raises questions about whether Tudyk’s character, Robot 4, might be none other than Kelex – a veteran Kryptonian service robot from the comic books, who has previously served as Superman’s aid and caretaker at the Fortress of Solitude.

Despite not explicitly stating so, director James Gunn later affirmed that Alan Tudyk is the one providing the voice heard in the recent clips.
On Threads, a DC enthusiast expressed excitement saying, “I can’t wait for this! By any chance, was that Alan Tudyk voicing one of the robots?” To this, Gunn acknowledged with, “You’ve got my attention.
On July 11, 2025, Superman will soar into theaters. Until that day, explore all the forthcoming DC television shows and films, keep tabs on James Gunn’s Batman project, and delve into all the information available about Clayface.
