Alan Ritchson, Owen Wilson Commence Queensland Shoot for ‘Runner’

The action-thriller “Runner,” featuring stars like Alan Ritchson (known for his role in “Reacher”) and Owen Wilson, is set to be another big-screen project for Queensland, Australia.

The movie, started filming on March 31 in Brisbane and Gold Coast, narrates the story of Hank Malone (Ritchson), a top-tier delivery man, who is assigned to transport an essential organ to a seven-year-old girl. Initially, this seems like a routine task, but things take a turn for the worse when the valuable package becomes the target of hostile forces. Wilson plays Ben, a fellow medical courier who finds himself in need of protection by Ritchson’s character.

Following the completion of “Bear Country,” which wrapped up filming on March 23 in the same area, there’s now a new production called “Runner” underway, boasting an impressive ensemble cast featuring Russell Crowe, Aaron Paul, Teresa Palmer, Nina Dobrev, and Luke Evans.

Speaking as a movie enthusiast, I must say that Queensland is quickly gaining recognition as a prime location for film production. Whether it’s the raw, edgy backdrop of ‘Runner’ or the picturesque settings in ‘Ticket to Paradise,’ there’s something about the Sunshine State that truly shines on the silver screen.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled about the upcoming project that’s set to pour around AUD20 million ($12.6 million) into our local economy. Not only does this mean more opportunities for growth, but it also means nearly 90 of us locals will get the chance to contribute as cast and crew members. This production is being masterfully orchestrated by A Higher Standard and Nickel City Pictures.

Scott Waugh is the director for the movie, with screenplay by Miles Hubley and Tommy White. The producers are Mark Fasano from Nickel City Pictures, Jeffrey Greenstein from A Higher Standard, Deborah Glover from G2 Dispatch, Todd Garner, and Dan Spilo.

Greenstein stated, ‘Runner’ is our second project with Mark Fasano and Nickel City Pictures in Queensland. We find the location’s visual appeal and diversity in its landscapes incredibly inspiring for cinematography, which is why we decided to not only collaborate here but also set and shoot a film right here.

2025 sees the movie joining a list of productions filmed in Queensland, alongside titles like “Anaconda,” “Fing!,” “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” (Season 2), “Spa Weekend,” and “Voltron.” Previous releases from the region include “Black Snow,” “Darby and Joan,” “Good Cop/Bad Cop,” “Nautilus,” “Spit,” and “The Lost Tiger.” Upcoming films include “Dangerous Animals” and “Mortal Kombat 2,” with the latter scheduled for release later this year.

As a devoted enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of this venture that boasts numerous financial advantages. These perks encompass the allure of Australia’s Location Offset, the attractive pull of Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy, and the warm support extended by the City of Gold Coast. This trio significantly boosts the project’s prospects, making it an exciting endeavor to be involved in!
