Workers at Alamo Drafthouse locations in New York City concluded a 58-day labor action, having reached a deal with the management team of the movie theater restaurant chain.
Workers from the lower Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn branches have reached an agreement with their union that all dismissed workers will be reinstated. The union went on strike in mid-February following prolonged negotiations with management over vital matters such as scheduling, pay, and safety issues. The deal, approved on Sunday, will bring back the approximately 70 employees who were laid off. Additionally, it will restore their accumulated paid time off, sick days, seniority, and hire date, according to the union. Previously dismissed staff members are expected to return to work on Friday.
The union triumphantly declared victory on Instagram! The jobs have been reinstated, so we’re set to get back to work on April 18. However, you can show your support right away by visiting the Alamos in Brooklyn or Manhattan starting today.

As a dedicated film enthusiast and an employee at Alamo Drafthouse in lower Manhattan or downtown Brooklyn, I’m proud to stand with my fellow workers who are part of United Auto Workers Local 2179. Unfortunately, our venue in Staten Island isn’t part of this union. On Valentine’s Day, we decided to take a stand and go on strike, as we believe that Alamo Drafthouse hasn’t been negotiating in good faith with us regarding our working conditions and fair compensation. We hope for a resolution that respects our hard work and passion for cinema.
Alamo Drafthouse chose not to respond about the layoffs, but earlier reports indicated that these dismissals were due to the usual seasonal slump at movie theaters. Typically, cinema chains hire additional staff during the holiday season and then reduce their workforce when attendance decreases in the early months of the new year. Moreover, the company also cut a certain number of venue employees across its 44 locations in January, along with 15 corporate workers, for the same reason.
Last year, Alamo Drafthouse was taken over by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Prior to this acquisition, the cinema chain had sought protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2021, due to the ongoing difficulties faced by global theater chains during the extended lockdowns caused by COVID-19.
