Alamo Drafthouse Dedicates Newly Renovated Brooklyn Theater to Spike Lee (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie critic with a lifelong passion for cinema, I can confidently say that this latest move by Alamo Drafthouse is nothing short of inspired. The dedication of their newly renovated downtown Brooklyn theater to Spike Lee is not only fitting but also long overdue.

Alamo Drafthouse has chosen to dedicate its recently refurbished downtown Brooklyn theater to the renowned director, Spike Lee. Known for his strong ties to New York City, he will be celebrated on September 12 with a special event and a screening of his semi-autobiographical movie from 1994 titled “Crooklyn”. Furthermore, Lee will engage in a live question and answer session.

The upcoming private event will showcase the unveiling of the Spike Lee Cinema plaque, inscribed with: “Just like numerous iconic films over the last 40 years, this theater is a ‘Spike Lee Joint.’ From his intricate depictions of Brooklyn life in ‘Do the Right Thing’ and ‘Crooklyn,’ to his powerful portrayal of ‘Malcolm X,’ his artistic vision has significantly influenced our society and left a lasting impression on this city. As such, from Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, this Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will officially be called the Spike Lee Cinema.

The dedication event takes place concurrently with the theater’s recent renovation and enlargement. Alamo Drafthouse, which initially opened at Brooklyn’s City Point complex in 2016 with seven screens, has undergone an upgrade, adding five new cinemas. These cinemas are now equipped with laser projectors, as well as the ability to show RealD 3D, 70mm, and 35mm films on certain screens. The new cinemas will boast premium leather recliners, each featuring a personal swivel table for patrons to comfortably enjoy the in-seat dining options that have made Alamo Drafthouse popular among movie enthusiasts.

Following the substantial renovation of our Brooklyn branch, we swiftly decided to name it after Spike Lee,” expressed Michael Kustermann, Alamo Drafthouse CEO. “His films have played a significant role in shaping Brooklyn’s identity for many years, and we feel privileged to contribute to preserving this rich history.

Excitedly, I must share that Alamo Drafthouse’s unique blend of fresh releases, timeless classics, and special events has always been captivating. However, what truly sets it apart is the grand opening of the Spike Lee Cinema. This cinema will showcase a remarkable series of retrospective programming, featuring the iconic works of Spike Lee himself! Mark your calendars for “Crooklyn” (Sept. 17), “Mo’ Better Blues” (Sept. 21), “Jungle Fever” (Sept. 22), “Do the Right Thing” (Sept. 28), “Clockers” (Sept. 29), and “Inside Man” (Oct. 6). These cinematic gems are not to be missed!
