Artificial intelligence doesn’t actually create original content; it remixes what it’s given. Hideo Kojima, the game designer behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, thinks this makes AI useful for updating and reimagining existing video games.
As Kojima stated in an interview with Rolling Stone Brasil:
I think that, in the future, remakes and sequels will be made by AI.
While this future might appear grim, Kojima worries about a different issue. He believes the real problem isn’t the use of artificial intelligence itself, but rather the tendency of game developers and publishers to rely on familiar ideas instead of innovating.
I often get asked about the constant stream of sequels in gaming, but it’s not just games – we see the same thing with remakes and reboots in movies. It makes financial sense to revisit familiar properties because they’re easier to produce and attract funding. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that from a business perspective. However, relying solely on sequels and remakes would be risky. It’s crucial that the industry continues to innovate and create original content.
Hideo Kojima is a remarkably innovative creator who is always exploring new ideas. He loves making video games, but admits it can be draining. He says he’ll stop creating if he ever loses his passion for it, something his fans are hoping won’t happen for a long time.
