AI Ghibli Controversy: When Artists Fight With Internet Trends 🤔

Oh, OpenAI, you cheeky little rascal! You’ve done it again—this time by turning real-life photos into “Ghibli Art,” as if the internet wasn’t already drowning in anime filters, sparkles, and poorly thought-out AI experiments. Millions are glued to this trend, sharing their “masterpieces” (LOL) on social media, while Sam Altman casually says their GPUs are frying. Cool flex, Sam. 😎🔥

But surprise, surprise! Artists worldwide aren’t laughing. In fact, they’re furious, inconsolable, and probably drafting strongly worded letters as we speak. They’ve united against the idea of AI bulldozing their decades of skill, hard work, and—oh, I don’t know—actual creativity. They’re calling out OpenAI for a feature that might as well be labeled “How to Steal Art 101, Now With Added Pixels.”

And guess who’s leading the charge? None other than Hayao Miyazaki himself. Yes, the legend behind Studio Ghibli, a man who probably rolls his eyes harder than the rest of us combined. Miyazaki straight-up called AI-generated art “an insult to life.” Honestly, if Hayao Miyazaki says your work is trash, pack it up. Take it as gospel and move on. ✌️

Since this utter garbage is trending, we should take a look at what Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of Studio Ghibli, said about machine-created art.

Oh, but it doesn’t end there. Social media is buzzing with spicy takes from artists who are officially done with this trend. Enter: rage, sarcasm, and some very valid complaints. One person tweeted that while AI is great for dishwashing and laundry (seriously, can we get that feature already?), it should probably steer clear of art. Another artist simply suggested—get this—“COMMISSIONS.” I mean, groundbreaking idea, right? Actually pay humans to paint in that swoon-worthy style instead of hitting refresh on your AI. Revolutionary. 🖌️💸

I’m not against AI, there are wonderful ways where it can better human lives. Art is NOT one of them. F*ck the marketing moron that started the ghibli ai trend. It is disrespectful to the amount of effort that goes into each frame by artists from the studio/artists in general.

the ghibli AI art stuff is actually asinine considering the original creator doesnt like AI art and its disrespectful to him but also if yall want that artstyle so bad just (crazy idea) COMMISSION actual artists ?

Of course, the controversy doesn’t end with Studio Ghibli. OpenAI and its “fair use” policy seem to be putting copyright laws through the wringer. Who knew appropriating people’s original work to teach AI how to make Picasso knockoffs would be controversial? 🤷‍♀️ Lawsuits are flying in from all directions—artists, The New York Times, and probably someone’s furious grandma. And let’s not forget the unforgettable “AI art auction” fiasco at Christie’s, where thousands of artists protested in a loud chorus of “AI? More like thievery!”

So, there you have it—the toxic soup of misguided trends, furious creatives, and awkward Silicon Valley flexes. Honestly, the next time you’re tempted to slap an AI filter on something, consider doing the unthinkable: call an artist. Or maybe just stick to automating your laundry. 🧺✨
