AI-generated manga is becoming one of Japan’s best sellers

A manga created using artificial intelligence has become incredibly popular, reaching the number one spot on a major Japanese ebook platform.

According to Automaton, the e-book ‘My Dear Wife, Will You Be My Lover?’ is currently number one in the Young Adult category. This four-part digital comic, which came out on December 28th, tells the story of a couple in their thirties trying to fall in love again.

Although the manga is a commercial success and currently number one in sales, opinions among readers are divided. Many have criticized its artistic and narrative choices, specifically noting that character designs feel unoriginal and reused, the dialogue is overly verbose and reads like a novel, and the backgrounds lack detail.

The manga’s popularity has also raised worries for some readers about whether AI-created comics should be allowed to be sold on the platform.

AI manga leads in popularity rankings

There’s also been talk about whether some good reviews were faked, and some people are now thinking about moving to platforms that don’t allow content made by AI.

Kazuaki Ishibashi, a manga author and editor famous for Mob Psycho 100, believes that audiences have largely accepted AI-generated art. According to translations from Automaton, he noted that reactions haven’t been strongly negative, and many readers don’t seem to mind if an artist uses AI tools.

Maybe only the people who made this are worried about how it’s being received. Is this moment finally here? I think it’s going to become very popular this year.

Artificial intelligence is quietly becoming more common in many areas. For example, it’s helping officials find and stop illegal downloads of manga and anime. It’s also changing how video game companies hire artists, with some now asking applicants to create art live during interviews to confirm it’s original and not AI-generated.
