Approximately a year following FKA Twigs’ Congressional testimony, the No Fakes Act has been reintroduced and gained YouTube‘s endorsement. On April 9th, YouTube publicly declared its backing for the bill and plans to revise its privacy policy to safeguard individuals’ likenesses. In a statement, YouTube expressed pride in supporting this crucial legislation that addresses the escalating issue of misuse related to unauthorized digital replicas, such as AI-created content imitating a person’s image or voice for deceitful purposes. The bipartisan bill aims to shield all Americans from deepfakes and AI; it mandates user-generated content platforms like social media to promptly remove any deepfakes from their platforms. Other advocates for the bill include SAG-AFTRA, the RIAA, OpenAI, and the MPA.
In a conversation with Congress today, I, Randy Travis, voiced my backing for the proposed bill. I elucidated that artificial intelligence has been instrumental in assisting me in crafting fresh tunes, but made it clear that I was the one who gave the go-ahead, and no creation took place without my knowledge. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, I stated emphatically, “Nobody should be permitted to misrepresent someone else’s words or depict them doing things they never did.” Similarly, Fran Drescher voiced her approval for the bill, highlighting the impact deepfakes have had on her persona. “When these malefactors are attempting to attribute words to me that I haven’t spoken, it contradicts my moral compass and everything I stand for,” she expressed. “It’s high time we establish what is right and what is wrong.
