AI Avatar Sues for Time in Court

As a gamer diving into a new challenge, I found myself introducing AI in the New York State Supreme Court, only for things to take an unexpected turn. The judge, seemingly frustrated, bellowed across the room to shut down the system.

On March 26, 2025, when Jerom Dewald, a party involved in an employment disagreement, was set to address the New York State Supreme Court, it was another person or entity that delivered the speech instead.

Instead of personally giving his opening statement, Dewald opted to utilize Artificial Intelligence. An AI character took over the task instead of him. On the courtroom TV screen, a digitally created, fair-skinned, blond-haired figure was displayed, who was entirely an artificial creation.

As soon as the AI avatar began its opening statement, Judge Sallie Manzanet-Daniels, one member of the five-judge panel, abruptly interjected and terminated the video feed, subsequently criticizing the plaintiff publicly.

Before his scheduled court appearance, Dewald made a unique request. Although he didn’t receive direct approval for an artificially intelligent legal aid companion, he asserted that he had sought permission to present a pre-recorded video in the courtroom instead.

On the day in question, it was unexpected that Dewald’s prerecorded video didn’t feature himself. Instead, as reported by the Associated Press, the plaintiff aimed to create an AI version of himself with assistance from a tech firm based in San Francisco. However, due to time constraints, he opted for using the standard avatar that we all recognized.

The goal was to ensure that Dewald could smoothly deliver his opening statement without any stuttering or similar issues, but unfortunately, the attempt proved unnecessary because the AI’s presence in the courtroom turned out to be brief and transient.

Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels inquired, “Hang on for a moment, is this the attorney representing our case?” To which she then requested, “Could you please turn off the video completely.” In response, Dewald clarified, “I created that. It’s not a real person.

The judge responded, “It would have been helpful if you had mentioned that when you submitted your application. Unfortunately, you didn’t share that information with me… I don’t take kindly to being deceived.

In previous court appearances, you have provided verbal testimony. Therefore, it seems there might be a health issue hindering your ability to speak now, or perhaps not.

Beyond this, the judge asserted that Dewald seemed to be leveraging his court appearance as an opportunity to kickstart an AI-centric enterprise. In clear terms, she warned him, “You will not utilize this courtroom as a platform for your business venture, sir.

In a later interview with the Associated Press, Dewald stated, “I received quite a harsh treatment.” He added, “The court seemed displeased by it.” Eventually, Dewald issued an apology to the court.
