‘Agatha All Along’ Stars Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza and Joe Locke on How Queer It Is: ‘It Will Be a Gay Explosion by the End of It’

As a longtime advocate for representation and visibility of underrepresented groups in media, I am thrilled to see “Agatha All Along” making history with its unprecedented LGBTQ representation. Having grown up feeling marginalized and without relatable characters on screen, it’s heartening to witness the normalization of queer stories within mainstream entertainment.

The team responsible for “Agatha All Along,” including its actors and creators, are applauding the groundbreaking LGBTQ representation in the Disney+ show.

As a passionate cinephile, I wholeheartedly concur with that sentiment. At the recent premiere, Sasheer Zamata, who brilliantly portrays Jennifer Kale, echoed this view when she was told that “Agatha” is Marvel’s most gay-themed project yet. She went on to say, “You’ll understand as you watch. Witches, by their very nature of being outcasts and set apart for various reasons, are inherently queer.” This series indeed offers a commendable representation of diverse characters, underscoring the power we all possess to rise above and achieve greatness.

As a fan, I can’t help but appreciate Joe Locke’s portrayal of Teen in the series. He shared that the character has multiple dimensions and being gay is one aspect. This, he believes, is one of the show’s strengths. It’s refreshing to see that Teen is a queer character, yet his identity isn’t the sole focus. Instead, it’s delightful to witness these positive, well-rounded LGBTQ+ characters on screen.

Kathryn Hahn, portraying Agatha Harkness, shared that the intriguing aspect lies in its deviation from expectations: “It’s not precisely what it seems. It has become quite ordinary.

Following my breakthrough role in “Heartstopper,” I stepped forward publicly about my identity. Similar to me, Leslie Jones Zamata, once a part of Saturday Night Live, recently declared her queer identity in an interview with Them. At the “Agatha” premiere, I expressed my admiration for Wanda Sykes, another Black queer woman in comedy, who courageously lives her truth. I feel honored to be among so many inspiring individuals who openly embrace their identities.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about Aubrey Plaza. Back in 2016, she hinted in an interview with The Advocate that her romantic interests span across genders. While she didn’t reveal much, she playfully teased about a character named “Agatha,” promising a grand, gay climax by the end of it. I can hardly wait!

Plaza plays Rio Vidal while Marvel newcomer Patti LuPone portrays Lila Calderu.

As Alice Wu-Gulliver, the character I play in Marvel’s show, I can confidently say it’s one of the most vibrantly queer productions out there. With all the grandeur and spectacle already present, what makes it even more LGBTQ+ is the inclusion of Patti LuPone’s enchanting voice.
