Light spoilers for Avatar: Fire and Ash lie ahead.
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash is now in theaters as part of the 2025 film lineup. This third Avatar movie continues the story from The Way of Water (2022) and expands the world of Pandora and its Na’vi people. The characters develop and change as they face new challenges, and the film explores some previously untold parts of the main character, Jake Sully’s, history.

A Key Relationship For Jake Would’ve Been Perfect To Highlight In Fire And Ash
A major theme Cameron explores in this new Avatar film is how people cope with loss, and the Sully family is deeply affected by grief at the beginning of the story. In the previous film, Way of Water, Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son, Neteyam, died. This movie opens with the family still mourning, and Jake and Neytiri are growing apart emotionally. Their son Lo’ak, who blames himself for Neteyam’s death, is also being shut out by Jake.
I was really surprised while watching the movie that they didn’t mention Jake’s twin brother, Tommy. It felt like a missed opportunity, especially since so much of the story is about Jake connecting with Lo’ak. For those who don’t know, Tommy was Jake’s identical twin, and he was originally chosen for the Avatar Program by the RDA. He went through all the training, but sadly, he was killed in a robbery before he could actually join the program. That’s why Jake ended up taking his place, so it felt like an important part of Jake’s backstory to leave out.

After seeing The Way of Water a few years ago, I thought Neteyam’s death would set up a similar emotional arc for Jake and Lo’ak, mirroring the tragedy surrounding Tommy. While the details of their deaths are different, it felt like a natural way to connect the two characters – both have experienced the loss of a brother. It seemed logical that this shared grief would be explored in Fire and Ash.

I’d Like To See This Part Of Jake’s Past Expanded Upon If Other Films Are Made
Details about Tom Sully appear in the 2017 comic Avatar: Brothers, and fans would love to see his story explored further in a future movie. Even if Jake Sully doesn’t talk about his brother’s death to his children, it could still become relevant to the plot. Perhaps Tommy’s death wasn’t just a senseless act, but connected to a larger mystery.

Even if Jake’s brother doesn’t reappear, the future of this movie series is still uncertain. James Cameron is prepared to film the fourth and fifth movies he’s envisioned, but he knows big-budget films are costly and need to be financially successful. After a strong opening weekend for Fire and Ash, it’s still unclear whether the movie will earn enough globally to convince Disney to fund two more films.
It remains to be seen how well the third Avatar movie will perform in theaters. But until we know for sure that the series is finishing, I’ll continue to speculate about whether Jake’s relationship with his brother will be explored further. In the meantime, check out Fire and Ash in cinemas now, and you can stream the first two Avatar films with a Disney+ subscription.
